H KIDSV ILLK, J ULY 8. I W4 lI&Kl.Ol l i: UK Y, The reault of the prohibition c'ec tion in Charlotte where 1.030 votes were cast against saloous ami only 615 in favor of the in shows that a healthy-sentiment will back up the experiment th-re If any point on the face f the earth could make a success of prohibition that point' js Charlotte. Its' Mayor anil tlie entire force of ollieers are great temperance promoter and they muit realize that it is up-t' -them to ruulie good what they promised in the campaign. The law is to be en forced by its friends there an 1 we will wat:h witj interest the result of the experiment uuder the most favorable auspices..'. Durham. Danville and FayeUcvillo seem to be making a mess of their experiment, but it might be sii.1 that the proposi tion in those towns are not having a fair show, although wo know of no reason why this is the case. But such cannot be said of Charlotte. There were nine hundred voters who did not express a preference at the polls, but it can be safely said that theso will do nothing to hinder the law being enforced.' While a great .majority of these doubtless believed that tlie present slate of affairs was preferable to prohibition they 'said by their action that they were willing to let the other side have a show to make good what it claimed Nearly every town in the State has at one time or another done just what Charlotte is doing, and the great ma jority have returned to the high license system, but that is no good reason w'jy Charlotte, with her peculiar con - ditions, will! not iiiako it a success. We stop the press to announce that Tho Weekly' and Tim Kkvjicw have boon advocating the nomination of the same man for Tresi cnt, which may cause some confusion or excite ment among some people who are superstitious. I'roepccts for a lino crop in this section are very encouraging. Tlie yield of wheat lias greatly surpassed ' the expectations of the people in our county and all crops on the hill look promising. The people of this sec tion ought to bo happy, and tney arc If Cleveland had been nominated and Aycock or Daniel or Joe Uailey, of Texas, had been put on the ticket with him. and tho uegro plank of the Kcpuolican platform properly con demned by the Democratic platform it would not be a hard matter to guCHS how the South would have given her entire electoral vote. Reidsville is tho "one town in the Slate which is growing steadily all the time without a boom of any kind. Money invested here will bring good returns and the attention ol capital ists is invited. It is a beautiful place with a remarkable health record and a steady growth which will causo no reaction or dull times Wednesday New Hern voted to give prohibition a trial, scarcely a hundred votc9bei ng cast agai nlthe issue. Those who believe in high license saloons voted with tho prohi bitionists in., order to get rid ol the scores of grog shops similar to what Reidsville unee had. It is the only means by which a community can bo rid o tl.cm. The result of tho prohibition dis pensary election in Charlotte shows clearly that one prophet is without honor in his own heme. The result showc I that only 57 voters believed in the dispensary while 1,103 were against it. The decision was quite decisive. Bryii Dod(t Quatioa. St. Lot is. Mo, July 4 Several North Carolinians in jesting humor. headed by Delegate Holt, a wealthy cotton manufacturer, decided to beard Mr. Bryan in his rooms at the Jeffer son tonisrht and demand to Know whether he would supjiort the nomi nees ol the convention in which he is to participate He received his callers with somewhat haughty dig nity. Mr. Holt was the spokesman and put the question. "I do not ask any person or party how I .shall vote," lesponded Mr. Bry an, grandly. "This," referring to his heart, over which he had placed one hand, "is responsible only I can no tell lid the conventio has adjourned and I have read the platform " Then the North Carolinians depart ed. Down in the lobby they discuss ed the incidenttold an Illinois dele gate and an Oir.o delegate, and finally decided Brya'ns answer was not at nil aatislactury. Up the stairs all went, d a6ain appeared before the Ne- braskan. "I supported you." reiterated Mr. Holt, stoutly. "Will you support the nominee of this convention?" Would yau support Mr. Roosevelt?" replied Bryan, Holt respondod : " Mr, Bryan, I consider that an insult, and 1 apoligijse to the Democ racy of North Carolina for ever hav ing cast a vote for you." Then the visitors turned on their heels and U parted in silen.e. Threaleni Life of Governor Montague. Special to Ihe Tlmca-DlBpntch. ' Baltimoke, July 6. Police Mar shall Farnan today received a letter threatening the lives of Gov. Monfa irue, of ' Viaginia ; Senator Gorman. Senator Tillman, Governor Warfield. ex-Governor Smith, and "all other negro haters." The letter purports to be written from the "headquarters of the B. B. Baltimoie Lodge, No 373 Black Brotherhood." It declares that the brotherhood Is arming throughout the country, and especially in the South, to kill not only the men who are their enemies, but also their fam ilies as well "Our women," says their circular, will attend to the children and so called white women." Further on the circular says 2 We are getting tirod of this one-sided business, ani we will stop this lynch law." It winds up : "Our motto is 'death' ; our aim U justice and vindi cation ; our field is the South. Death to all negro haters. Marshal Farnan docided to pay no attention to the circular, but finally concluded to ; put several detectives on the t usc, to find out just what the Black Brotherhood, with its alleged large membership, amounts to. Raior and Bludieoa, GuEiiNSHouo, N. C, July 7. John Lee and John Crosby, powerful ly built negroes, had a desperate fight last night on East Washington street It appears that they had some words yotterday morning, which wt.s renew ed when they met again hist night at 10 o'clock. Ono ol them used a razor the other a bludgeon about three feet long. How long they lought is not known, but both men were so badly hurt that tho police were unable to remove them to iho lock-up and a guard was placed over them. Each nelllgercnt is injured about the face and head, their faces being cut and pummelled into a jelly. . Ono man's eye was punched out, the ncsc of the other is so u,uch injured that death may result. Brutally Torfurl.
