Reidsville Review, TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. OLIVER BROS., Proprietors. ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR. REIDSVILLE, JUNE 27, 1905 KAlKHiH'S TRACK HT. The news from young Dockery at Raleigh this morning is to the effect tiat his strong constitution is making a . remarkable fight for his recovery from the wounds he received from a pistol in thi hands of the father of the young girl with whom he had committed sin, and here's hoping that he will pull through. Tho affair is sad enough as it is. and the death of this yo-.-ng man will not correct any wrong which has been done, or stop the heart-aches of the parents of Eva Rogers, Dock ery was no more guilty of the crime than Bernard or the two girls, and if it is right that he should die for nis sin the others should die too. The Howell brothers say they will kill Bernard when he returns to Ral eigh, but people who intend to commit murder do not usually advertise their intentions in this way. Bernard, who was at Wrightsville Beach when young Dockery was shot, has not been seen since Saturday night, when he passed thought Hamlet, and it will be better for the State if he is never found within her borders again. Rev. J. A. Gates, who was nt one time so ardently in favor of the Fay etteville dispensarj, is now making speeches in the State against this great moral institution. If we mistake not it was he who wrote a letter to the editor of Webster's Weekly after Roidsville's contest two years ago, congratulating him upon his fight for the dispensary. Eventually pensary will be dishonored ownnd even by MaeKelwee. the dia- and dfs ItllolltHII I llfllllt-HH. Texas: "I hereby certify that Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy cured my husband of a severe aitacic or. vunan aiarrnoea, which he brought home from Cuba. When Capt. S. B. Alexander was in the Senate of 1901 from Mecklenburg, McKelway wrote lies about him, and in a card in The Observer of February 27 of that year, Capt. Alexander said: "I desire to say that each of the statements in so far as they refer to me is an absolute and unqualified falsehood, and unless A. J. McKelway is a curious fool, he knew they were false when he wrote them," Of course he did. Capt. Alexander concluded: "I regret being forced into this con troversy, but I am determined that seemingly pious people who punch holes in the Ninth Commandment with the recklessness of a savage shall not utter j falsehood about me without at least being told of it." s And that is another man's opinion. The Manufacturers' Record, of Bal timore, used to try to discuss questions with this blackguard, but was com pelled to ring off. Under the heading, "Incurable," The Record had this edi torail some weeks ago: "In explanation of an unfortunate condition now apparently become chron ic, and in natural devolution now con fined chiefly to the columns of The Presbyterian Standard, published at Charlotte, N. C, The Manufacturers' Record need only to recall two facts. In its issue of December 2, 1904, The New York Times published a statement signed by A. J. McKelway, containing the following: " 'There has been so much exagger ation of the facts about the child labor in the Southern States that even the intelligent linotype in The Times office must have . thought that the ngures given by me lately to Mr. Stevenson were too small.' "In a letter to the editor of The Manufacturers' Record under date of December 31, 1901, A. J. McKelway, referring to this statement in The New York Times of December 2nd, said: ' "I wanted to let down the reporter, who was trying to do us a service, as easily as ptssible, and so made the lino type suggestion. "Yet the editor of The Presbyterian Standard expects The Manufacturers' Record and other lovers of truth to take his imaginings seriousiy. He is in capable of understanding that he has discounted himself as a judge of truth. "The Presbyterian Standard should know that ho reputable paper can join issue with its editor in polecat polemics. " Here the polecat confesses in black and white that he lied. But why multiply instances? His character for lying on and fly-blowing truthful men is perfectly well known in Chrrlotte. But it is not alone as a liar and hypocrite, that "as a rotten fish , in the moonlight he stinks and shines." There is no limit to his viciousness and vindictiveness. Before prohibition went into effect in Charlotte he tried, through a long letter to the proprietor of a drug store, to effect the discharge of a druggist, a man of family at that, who ref usen him credit for a quart of liquor and would not allow him to take it out of the house until he had paid for it. He is the only Presbyterian preach er on recprd-the only preacher of any kind, it is to be hoped-who was ever guilty of the ineffable baseness of at tacking a dead brother preacher ere he was more than cold in his grave. The subject of this hyena-like performance was- that Godly man, the late Rev. Dr. R. E. Caldwell, of Winston. Yet who has not seen this fiend on the streets of Charlotte on Sunday, in his jim-swinger coat, walking slow and looking as devout as Cornelius, the cen turion! His heart is full of hate while his face is longest, and he is contriving then how he may hurt somebody-r looking up some scheme of vengeance between church time and family pray ers. Great heavens! liow can such a fraud and hypocrite sleep at night! ; And this is the editor of the organ of a great, denomination. He has taKen the paper edited in turn by McNeill, Miller, Fuller and McLaurin, and con verted it into a ' sewer. A secular pa per, purely in the interest of good gov ernment, criticises in perfectly respect ful terms, perfect legitimately and strictly within its rights, acts of a mu nicipal administration. A non-resident blackguard, the editor of a Church, or gan, mind you, seizes this as a pretext to assail personally, with coarse brutal ity, the editor of the secular paper, a citizen and a tax-payer. As incident to this outburst of malevolence he takes occasion to say that he does not know whether or not the aldermen of the last administration, in buying from themselves, violated any law. And thi re is the law right before his eyes! Nobody, not even the aldermen them selves, deny the violation. Nobody. but McKelway. The unskillful, pitiful liar! What must the Christian men and wo men of the Presbyterian denomination think of the hypocritical humbug who wears the livery of the Most High God and uses it as a cloak behind hleh Lii vainly thinks to hide his fiendish ha treds. If this is religion I would rather have smallpox. Nobody is safe from hlj fianaaain Axtrtrar an4 f rlnaA t Kia I accurate analysis of his character with the familiar quotation from Plutarch: "There was in the city one Socius, in famous for his insolence and villiany, who thought the perfection of liberty was licentiousness of speech."
