I D 0 TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. v THERE VIEW COMPANY, (Incorporated) ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR. REIDSVILLE, OCT. 25 1S07. They are having exciting times in fi ll incial circles in New York and Pitts burg this week and quite a panicky feeling has prevailed. The steady de clines in stocks the past eight months has wiped out billions of asoets and some of the frenzied financiers have been badly pinched. The demand for money is greater than the supply and some of the largest banks and trust companies in New York have found difficulties in maintaining comfortable cash reserves. The Knickerbocker Trust Company of New York was forced to close its doors after paying out eight millions dollars to clamorous depositors Tuesday who nmde a run on that institution. Its liabilities are said to he $62,000,000. The same day a big stock brokerage firm and a large real estate firm were forced to the wall. Stock values mlted like a snow ball in summer and many of the prominent is sues made new low records. The disH turbance reached Pittsburg Wednesday when the big Westinghouse Electric Co. went into the hand- of receivers, carrying down in a crash with it a big investment company and several sub si dary companies of tne electrical con cern. These failures created a tremen dous sensation and so great was th demoralization that the Pittsburg stock exchange closed its doors for a couple of days. The situation in New York, it is said, has materially improved in the past two days, powerful financial interests co.ning to the relief of the money market, restoring confidence and relieving the strain on the banks. The treasury department also gave relief by heavy deposits ol government tunas in the metropolitan banks. It is now be lieved the crisis has been passed. Hap pily the money stringency dcesn't seem to affect the south or any considerable section of the country outside of Wall Street and as long as the zone of dis turbance is confined to that area no serious business depression over the country at large may be feared. A check to advancing prices on many commodities may result which might not, however, prove m unmixed evil. Attorney General Bonaparte seems to be in dead earnest in his war on the bad trusts. He has dug up an old for gotten section of the Sherman anti trust law giving the government power to seize as contraband goods shipped from cne State to another or exported by any trust or corporation violating the provisions of that bill. Alleging that the American Tobacco Company and its alliesincluding the British To, biceo Company, constituted an unlaw ful combination in restraint of trade, the government authorities proceeded to seize a large shipment of leaf tobac co at Norfolk en route from the Dur- bam branch of the American Company j o ue Dnuan iiompany in cngiana. The tobacco ie being held until the courts can pass upon the government's contentions that the tobacco trust is an unlawful combination. The "bad" trusts are being made to quake in their boots by the attorney general's activity. This country produces, consumes ond sells to foreign consumers more than any other country in the world. We exported over 300,000,000 poudds last year, three times as much as any other c wintry exported, and yet we imported nearly 38,000,000 pounds. The use of tibacco is rapidly increasing. A hun dred years ago the tota' value of the manufactured tobacco crop was a 'little more thon $1,000,000 Then as now the South supplied the trade with the larg er part of the raw material. The Tar Heel, the semi-weekly paper started in Greensboro last year, to fight the Rollins-Butler faction of the Re publican party, has suspended publica tion. The stockholders held a meeting and it was agreed to susnend, to pay off all indebtedness, and sellout the entire outfit on the second of November John B. Would bete willing to spend $80.00 and a little elbow grease to have all I have told him of except the cutting machine and wood saw? I was. French has seen my ar rangements and since his descriptive powei will give those who are interested a much clearer idea of how to proceed with their water-works than I couln possibly do, I ask him to depart from his green pastures and black cattle long enough to help all who want a real good thing cheap.-H. H. Williamson, in The Progressive Farmer. Unlimited Fertilizer From The Air. When in 1898 Sir William Brooks, as many people will doubtless re call, attracted wide attention by de claring in an address before .the British Association that unless some means were found of replac in b the nitrogen taken from the aoil by cereals the world must soon face a grave situation, he could hardly have anticipated that the thing would be done within a few years. Sir William showed plain ly enough that the nitrates now mined in Chile and elsewhere could not Le depended upon very much l nger and that fixation of atmos pheric nitrogen consequently pre sented the only visible hojie. This process was already a demonstra ted fact, but its excessive cost made it corr niercially impracticable. To Nirway has been reserved the hon or and earliest profits of realy sol ving the problem. Ministerial and consular reports just received at Washington give an interesting of plants new to the world of man ufactures. At Nottoden, Norway, several years ago, a development of 2,(H0 electrical horse-power was utilized for producing nitrate of lime and nitrate of soda. By meth ods much mora efficieut than any employed in such work when Sir Wi ham delivered his address the plant has turned out 1,000 tons of these nitrates a year at good profit. Only last month a much larger plant, supplied with 40,000 horse power from the noted Tinfos water fall was put in optration. Before long a monster plant i 250,000 horse-power from the Rjukenfos fM wlli be begun, the capital Lav ing been readily subscribed in France. It is not easy to exaggerate the prospective importance of the dis covery of processes whereby nit rates can bejprofitablyp roduced in unlimited quantities through at inospheric combustion. Manifest ly the earth's productivity cannot ouly be maintained but enormously increased. Matifestly, also, the iu dustry of nitrogen fixation will te c )me a great one. Here would seem to be new possibilities for, Southern de velopment. In the piedmont section water-powers are now being developed on a great scale, and this country and continent prow grain for the world. To talk extracting from the atmosphere an immensely valuable productby the ton seeim seems wilder than promotion scheme of which Col. Mulberry Sellers ever dreamed, yet the facts speak fur themselves. Such are the woiiders which science continues to work for mankind. There may be nitrogen fixai tion plant right here in Charlotte be fore many years Who knows?-Charlotte Observer. Capt. Peay's Residence Burned. The home of Capt. J. W. Peay on Main stseet caught on fire in the second floor Tuesday afternoon at 6 o'clock, supposedly from a defective flue, and was burned to the ground. There was considerable time lost by the fire department in getting to the residence, aud mly the porch was saved. Netghbors who were soon on the scene managed to get out some of the things from the front rooms down stairs, but eome of the articles saved were smashed up. Capt. Peay had his house and furni ture insured He will probably rebuild early in the spring. Much sympathy is also felt for Mr. and Mrs. Russell Tucker, who boarded with Cpt. Railroad. 21. -The Corporation Commission today announced the result of its investigation into interstate freiget rates from Western North Car olina points, the result being an order that a case be brought against the N. & W. railway, the Big Four railway, and the Louisville & Nashville railway for the C3 rection of such rates to Winston-Salem and Durham. The investi gat on of the Commission began with the Norfolk & Western and these points because that road was the only road which reaches these points on its own railways from Cincinati and its route from that city is the shortest. The inrestigation is continued as to other rates and other rods. The Commission finds that the rates from the west to Winston-Salem and Durham are unreas onably and unjustly high, discrimina tory and unlawful and that this results partly from the fact that the Norfolk & Western treats Winston-Salem and Durham branches as independent roads whereas 'the tariff of rates should be made on the basis of continuous haul. The rate from Chicago to Rotnoke, Va. is 72 cents per 100 pounds and the Nor folk & Western adds the local rate, 51 cents from Roanoke to Winston-Salem. The, commission concludes the rate from, the west to Winston-Salem and Durham should be the same as that to Roatoke, Lynchburg and other Virgin ia points add that the contention made by theNorfoIk & Western that its rates to Virginia are unreasonably low ami cannot be sustained in view of the hsavy earnings of theroid. Tn earnings were shown by the last annu al report to be $11,639,604, a sum suffi cient to "pay tha interest, dividends, for work and supplies and leasing, a sur plus of $4,a78,000. The principal part of these earnings accrued from the low rates to Virginia points. . Hatch, clum agent for the Southern Railway. Leonard claims that he did not leave the switch open. It seems there was some thought of the freight reaching Hendrix in time to pass No. 34 there. Leonard claims that when this was abondoned ho went promptly and closed the switch. About that time, he says, he hard a noise which sounded like the pulling out of the drawhead but which was really the application of the emergency brakes and he ran back to see what was the trouble. While he was gone, he claims, the fireman, Brady, who was killed, thinking Leon ard failed to close the switch, went to close it, and opened it, thinking that he was closing it. This explanation, it nay he sail in passing, docs not appeal to practical railroad men, who say that firemen never tinker with a switch. It was rumored that Leonard had been on duty 23 hours and was there fore in no condition to attend to his duties. It is claimed by railroad men in Greensboro that while it had been twenty hours since he had been called he had had five hours at Franklin Junction when he could have slept had he so desired. , The universal opinion among railroad mjn, the Telegram adds, is that he waj responsible for the wreck and great surprise 'is expressed that he would give himself up with the chances so heavily aguinst him. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a con stitutional treatment.' Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in do ing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer one hundred dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address F J Cheney & Co, Toledo, O. "blind tigers" to which the phy sical refers are by no means an impos sible result of prohibition, but there are even greter evils than such evasions of the law. There are greater evils than the use of intoxicating beverages, and one of them is the use of drugs disguis ed under various names. Thousands of persons have got into the habit of re sorting to such drugs without really knowing the terrible menace contained in them. They may be had among the cooling drinks handed over the counter of a soda fountain, or the desire for them may hav been created originally in taking them according to a physician's prescription. However the habit may be formed, it is one really much more deleterious in its effects and one harder to combat than the whisjcey habit, wLca is bad enough Prohibition legislation to be perfectly effective should be supple mented by legislation reducing opportu lities for evasion of the law to a min imum, and also prevntinig an enlarged use of paralizing drugs as substitutes for whisk ey.Ex.
