At a conference of the Democrat lc State leaders at Lincoln, Nebraska. Wednesday afternoon, at which Mr. Bryan was present, it was decided that Mr. Bryan should be the party's candidate for the United States Sen ate next year. Mr. Bryan was not bidding fro the place, but the leaders demanded that he enter the race. Those of us who remember Hon. John M. Morehead as a baseball um pire know that when he made a de cision that he would never change it. and we are betting that if he has ev er said he would go to see the Pres ident and tell him a few things, that he will do it, and we are also banking on him tendering his resignation if lie does not succeed in having his candidate finally landed for census supervisor,' The other day when we predicted that he' would take his med icine we had lost sight of Mr. More head's propensity for sacking to his decisions. The State Department of Educa tion has jiint gotten out the initial number of a monthly special. letter from the division of teach-training that is designed to go into the hands of every public school teacher in North Carolina with a view to in creasing efficiency and bringing about uniformity in teaching methods. Tht November special just issued recites the fact that the rural schols throughout he State are Just opening and urges that active, earnest work be goten under way attheearliest pos sible momeiK. There are hints and references as to the best organiza tion of the district schools, systems of recitation, reading courses. With his arrival in Washington Wednesday, President Taft completed a tour of 12, ToJ miles occupying fifty seven days. In the trip he crossed thirty-seven States and territories, visited seven. y-six cities, not to men tion innumerable towns, made two hundred and fifty speeches, and at tended fifty banquets, besides break fasts and lunches. In the course of his travels he went over twenty-four biffereat railroad eysiems and en route gaLhered enough presents to fill twro or three express cars. These include saddles, Indian pottery, wines, honey, kegs of cider, scarf pins, golf sticks, and' sacks full of letters from cranks. W.J. HALLA DAY; Manager Greensboro, N. C. GOING BACK TO THE FARM. Kisewhere we are copying from the Progressive Farmer an article written by our countyman. Mr. A. L. French, with reference to the splendid op portunities which life on the farm presents youns men. We have in mind a number of young men who have moved from the farm to over crowded cities or the towns ami who have, later, returned to the rural dis tricts and made a splendid success in tilling the soil. It seems 'natural, as Mr, French pointed out. "that those who are suited or adapunl to farming will drift back to the cultivation of the soil. The following reference is o a young man who came from the 1 VI ha in section to Reidsville a few years ago, and who after tiring of town life, went bagk to the farm: Mr. Tom Herce. of Pelham, ,. ('.. Qld a lafg load of tobacco lu re to day,, the prices received being $. $:U and 45 per hundred, pounds: Hundreds of young men who had abandoned the farms to return again are making a success at fanning. have been Imbued -with new ideas and new methods which count mightily in the making of success on the farm today. ".-:'.- A STRANGE CHARACTERISTIC. We have frequently noticed what we thought was a more manifes; sym pathy On the part of the female pop- ulation for members of the. male sex j who might have trouble or adversity than they showed towards' those of their own sex. Likewise we have noticed that the men sympathize mor deeply with women in their affliction than they do with men. THE TROUBLE IN GREECE Filur of Hellenic Cause In Crete Has Brought About Disturbance. The cause of the naval revolt in Greece which led to the fight nt his toric Salamls is to be found probably In the recent failure of the Greek cause in Crete w-hen the powers upon Tur key's protest removed the -Hellenic flag which had been hoisted in Kanwi. For this failure to secure Crete for Greece the blame was popularly laid to governmental inefficiency, aud ;n a result several weeks ago two bat-1 talions of troops at Athens mutinied, j Retiring to the suburbs, they demand- j cd the surrender of the high places-! held in the nrniy by Crown Triiiee Con- j Btnntlne. commander in chief of the ! ureeu army; 1'riuee Andrew, a cap tain of cavalry, and I'rlnce Christo pher, a snblieutenaDt in the infantry. The cause of the malcontents was espoused by the powerful Military league, which on Oct. 13 forced the chamber of deputies to vote a meas ure abolishing the right of the crown prince to hold the post of commander in chief and of the othbr priuces to hold military commands, King George oarller In the day having persuaded his sons, the Princes Coustaiitine. George, Nicholas and Christopher, to resign their commissions.' Hefore the passage- of tuo military bills lu the chamber of deputies thirty roynllst mombers showed their disapproval by j withdrawing from the chamber, These' loyalists Insisted that the Military league was determined to force the king to abdicate. To Bome observers It seemed that the crisis had beeu postponwl by the retirement of the prlucesT but to all it was evident that It was likely to grow aCUte nualn If fliu Crnrnr.a run, deputies to the chamber at tho next Moftowhllo tho Military Icaztnv not latUBod with tho humiliation of tha royal family, Isgued ru ultlmntum de raanillne the enactment within twemty four hours of an ordinance suspuodinK all promotion for Cro yoars, the aboli tion of tho post of rear admiral, bore tofors held by Prince George, together with two vice admlralshlps and fifteen positions of lesser rank. The premier offered a compromise In the form of a bill altering the age limit for super annuation from sixty-five years to fifty eight years. This was not satisfactory to the league, nnd thirty naval officers retired to the island of Salamls, upon which Is situated the arsenal which these officers seized and', where pre vious to the engagement 'between the fleet and their torpedo' boats they in trenched themselves.
