THE BIRTH OF A NEW ERA.
Judge Dunn held the first session of
the new Recorder's court Monday
morning.
Our old friend George Land had the
honor of officially opening proceed
ings by pleading guilty to a charge of
drunk and disorderly. George was
pretty decent about it and made no
disturbance while in that condition so
the Judge let him off with' a fine of $2
and costs. George played in hard
luck this time and if he could have
carried out his original intentions he
would not have been locked up at all.
It seems that he hired a rig and a
driver to carry him out of the danger
zone, but during the course of pro
ceedings he fell off the wagon, not the
water wagon, but the wagon in which
iie was riding, and proceeded to take
a sleep in the middle of the road. It
Is rather an unusual sight to see a
man of George's prominence peace
fully slumbering in the public high
way. 1 he matter was brought to the
attention of Officer Covington who
picked George up and carried him into
the calaboose where he slept oft the
rest of his jag, and it was a pippin,
too. He lost a quart of whiskey dur-j
ing the melee, and taking it all around
he was more to be pitied than censured.':.':-''
A young lad by the name of Roy
Alcorn was the next to face the Judge
on a similar charge. He tanked up
on plain old-fashioned torpedoed
white lye. Officer Chatham found
him on the veranda of his father's
house in a caraatose condition. The
officer was attracted by the boy's
groans. He confessed and Was as
sessed with the same amount as the
preceding prisoner, and Brooks, the
barber, good fellow that he Is, paid his
way to freedom.
Frank Slayton, the next in order,
got a little excited Sunday evening
and "cussed out" a few people whose
views did not coincide with his own.
Officer Covington caught him with the
goods on and summoned him to court.
There were some extenuating circum
stances connected with the matter
and Judge Dunn let him off with a
fine of two dollars and costs.'
The case of Napoleon Jones was
continued till the next morning on a
charge of trespass.

Rev. Curry of Richmond occupied
the pulpit of the First Presbyterian
church of Spray on Sunday. He made
a strong plea for better living and
had an appreciative congregation.
The Review reporter has been told
that Mr. Curry is the grandson of a
former pastor of this same church.
