Health Conditions Are Bad In Belgium A study of the health conditions in Belgium since that people have endur ei the rigors of war and has suffered' the privation of many of the necessi ties of life, has shown that poverty and a poor, food supply i re direct causes of disease and productive of a low state of health. This study made by Dr. W. P. Lucas of San Francisco r.d contained in the American Medi cal Journal relates the Tact that the average person "registering at the clinics is ten pounds under weight while school children seemed to have stopped growing on account of under weight caused by undernutrition. Dr. Lucas reports that newly born babies tre not of normal size . or strength, that the average weight of newly born babies is about two-thirds normal and they average one Inch less in height. It is significant that the mothers are not able to nurse their babies as long as formerly, nor is their milk as rich.' 4 But the darkest picture painted by Dr. Luoia relates to the increase of coonsuimption in all parts of the king dom. The reports of the consump tion has about doubled In Brussels, while reports from the children's hos pitals now that the disease is more than twice as preyalent In children ns before the war. The report from the throat hospital is that tuberculosis of the throat has increased 150 per cent! " Dr. Tieron of Antwerp reports that in this city cases of consumption have becchae more frequent and more ma lignant; cures are much harder to ob tain and old cses apparently cured for five years or longer are reappear ing in large numbers. In Namur the consumption death rate has practical ly doubled. Poverty ajid a poor food supply re sulting in undernutrition are given as the funamental reasons for the bad health conditions that now obtain In Belgium.
