"Said Mrs. Beenigna Dalb of Hous ton, Tex., the secretary of the con vention: "'It Is not that we thlnX smoking an evil that we would have tobacco growing prohibited, but that we think food is more essential than smoking, and If we are going to get enough to feed ourselves and ths starving people of Europe, we have simply got to produce more food. " There are about 1,370,000 acres In the United States -devoted to rais ing tobacco, and we want laws pass ed that will divert this immense acreage to food crops.' "The association points out that there Is no shortage of fertile lands within the United States and that Mr. Herbert. Hoover ha3 very truly said that there will be from 16,000, 000 to 20,000,000 tons of food more than are needed by the American people from the crop yield of the current year. "The logic of fact Is not consider ed by the forces of fanaticism. Harking back to old times, some body in Danville tells of how tobacco and other things sold In the Virginia city forty years ago, and says truth fully enough that things were easier then with tobacco selling "high" at eighteen cents a pound that they are now with the weed averaging three or four times as much. For then in '79 It was- the Tery best shoes were to be had for $7 a pair, and only the recklessly extravagant paid such a price for footwear; sugar 5 cents a pound or 24 pounds for a dollar; eggs 15 cents a dozen, and ham 9 and 10 cents a pound. Yea, verily, those were good times, but few of us thought so then. High-priced tobacco is really benefiting but a few people it merely helps those concerned in keeping afloat in the ever-rising costs of every necessity. No matter how much tobacco brings, other things that the tobaccoman needs--or think3 he need-f-call for a corres pondingly larger outlay to get them before his golden weed took wings in the ascending market. After all, high prices coming and going amount to a "round robin" of rob- nry, and nothing else. Southern Tobacco Journal.
