C. According to railroad officials, the dtad animals were In a shipment of 1SS horses and mules loaded In closed box cars by direction of a captain in the quartermaster corps, U. S. A., who is said to have ex pressed the desire that the animals be kept warm. The shipment left Petersburg in charge of Private II. Adams, accompanied by another sol dier and two civilians. Examination of the cars en route, it is sold, re vealed the fact that the animals wero 'suffering. An attempt to unload the cr.rs at Norliua was made but the shipment was continued to Rateih with car doors partly 'open, when it wns found that there yere no facili ties for unloading at N'orlina.
