Charlotte, X C, May 12. Jn a fast fend' furious game the locals handed ; Durham her second defeat of the present series today, 5 to 4. Char ' lotto did not use her last half of the ' ninth, but for a few seconds things hung as if by a hair and the dinkiest . kind of a single would have given the (visitors a one run lead in the first half of the ninth. But this hit was - Jbeyond the power of W. Kelly to con . nect lor tne iDesr ne could do was a pop tip to Mollenkamp at first, -which retired the side, leaving a man on third and second to walk in unmolest - ted, and again placing the Hornets in Undisputed possession of the top pos Jtlon of the percentage column. The game belong to the Bulls 'but the followers of Jim Kelly refused to lldva it lftio.1r,tA nroa in Vi lnnfl with a 3 to 1 score until the seventh Inning when things assumed a differ ent aspect and the Kelyites forged to the front. (Drahan, who had been going good until this inning lost his thoofinir o n rl tf a m o noQr Incintr tha game. Morpeth opened the inning and died on an infield hit ball, played from third to first. Gorham followed with a two base hit to left and Angier connected safely for a shprt single to the same field, advancing the runner to third. IShort was given a base on balls filling the sacks. Kelly or dered Gooch to hit for McManus and ha smashed the ball to center field fence, unloading the bases and giving his team a one run lead. Butts hit a hot one to Patterson, who played the ball to Hicks, retiring Gooch at the plate and making the second out. W. Kelly died on an infield play. - Crestfallen, but determined, the Hornets went after the new pitcher, Frey, in their half of the same inning Wofford but failed to get but one hit which; safe when resulted in nothing substantial. The Bulls failed to score in the first half of the eighth and in the last half of the eighth Frey lost the game. The de ciding runs came in this manner Wof ford singled. Weiser was passed to first on iballs and Emory laid down a bunt that was fielded by Jack Frey but he attempted to hit the moon w'th the ball and the two runners on, romped across the pan with the runs that decided the ' contest. Emory wasted too much and was thrown out at third when he attempted to make that station. Murphy was sent to the mound to Jtitch the first half of the ninth, but after retiring two batters with ease he found his work to strenuous. Jack Frey singled and Butts doubled, causing a shaking feeling to pas sup and down the supporters of the locals. Murphy was promptly yanked from the box and Thralkill handed W. Kelly with grace and ease, causing him to fly out to Mollenkamp. The features of the game was the batting of the Hornet crew and the onderful seventh inning rally of the Visitors that almost resulted in a vic tory for them. Gorham, of the visi tors, was the only man to hit safely twice whit the hit of Gooch in the seventh will go down in the annals of baseball history.
