EIGHT? 1 THE MORNING HERALD, MAY 13, 1914. ilPPOIDT UP JO MAJOR r fewfs fs to Xooks Like Congress men Will Act WITHOUT JHE PRIMARY Some of the (Candidates Are Opposed IIB. GILES' TIME SOON OUT The Interest of the Democrats of This District Are Centered on the Ap pointment Tor me uurnarn Postoffice. It now looks like it will be up tcl Major Charles M. Stedman to settle jthe postoffice contest without the aid of a primary to give him a detailed idea of the wishes of the majority of the people of the community about the next 'bcjs cf the federal building ' in Durham. The primary idea came pretty late in the campaign, so late in fact that there was never a great deal of chance cf its being taken up unless all of the candidates wished the mat ter settled in this way. It has been promised that the ap pointment of the next postmaster would be made in time for the demo crat to take over the reins of office by the time the term of Mr. J. A. Giles expired, but at the present time ther is not the slightest public indi cation that Congressman Stedman nas made up his mind as to w hich of the four candidate "will receive the plum. To them all lie has promised that he (will carefully consider their applica tion and look into the endorsements! pt all w due diligence. Consequently today, so far as the (public knows, the contest is just about where it was six months ago. If the major iris decided which of the can didates to appoint he has either not told any of his frienos or they are k ring a tight mouth about the matter. There has been some suggestion that the appointment would not foe made till after the congressional con vention, which will nominate the next congressman from the fifth district, whether or not this will be the pro gram is not known, but there will be little cause for delaying the appoint ment, though of course that will be the privilege of the congressman should be so desire. Had there been other candidates for the congressional honors from the fifth district th epolitical reasons would have been enough to have caused the major to hold off the ap pointment till it was settled whici. man should represent the district in the next congress. It would not ibe a very politic thing to do to appoint the postmaster of Durham in the face of Opposition that might develop in the congressional convention Ibecauet Durham holds a ibig vote in that con vention. Since, however, there will fce no opposition to the candidacy o. the major, there will be no political reason for his holding off the appoint- fcnent. Without the aid of inside informa ' jUon which may or may not be at the Command of the candidates or theii campaign managers,, it is evident that the real contest will ,be between Mr Lun&ford and Mr. Markham. Should a condition arise whereby it would be impossible for the major to decide on either of these two candidates, whc would come out ahead in a primary were it held, there is a chance ioi either Mr. Robinson or Mr. Tomlinson. Xow as to which of the two leading candidates hold the better hand with the major, with the people of the com munity though ouds could be secured on one of the candidates were it put up to a primary or with the crowo that is having a say in the dealing out of federal patronage in North Carolina, it seems impossible to say. Who will be the next postmaster deserves just as big an interrogation mark today as it did a year ago. I Phone 48 ay. One of the most notable examples In giving in the history of North Car olina Sunday schools was that of Edgemont Baptist Sunday school, when on last Sunday the two hundred and forty-seven members present gave the large amount of $1,318.03. The occasion was "Church Building Day." and some weeks ago the teach ers and officers asked the school to contribute on that day $1,000 toward the building of the new church house, which is soon to be begun. The mem bers of the various classes took hold cf the Idea with intense eniuuslasrii and set to work in earnest to make the day a success, with the result as just stated. The pastor. Rev. Charles C. Smith, and the building committee of the church, are getting ready for work on the church to begin about June first, and the work will go forward as rap idly as funds will admit. When completed the building will be one of whici Durham may well feel I roud sad will greatly improve the sppearanc of that section in which it REMEMBER All Cars Stop At KING'S DRUG STORE The Coolest Spot in Town and So Convenient to Bring Year Friends and Meet Your Friends.
