In fact these resolutions were among the most interesting feature of the Durham district conference, waidi was presided over by Rev. Har ry North. Mr. Jt. l. Mis epeeh was fol lowed, by the adoption of the follow ing resolutions: "We, the Durham District Confer ence, .desire to thank the North Caro lina Medical society for its recent ut terance, .condemning the use of alco holic beverages in any form. We are also glad to read their statement that !ii 1b no longer necessary in the prac- uce or medicine. "We desire to put ourselves on rer- ord as favoring the state law proposed by the executive committee of the North. Carolina Anti-Saloon league to pronion tne delivery of liquor for bevr erage purposes and are glad to learn that, in a recent decision handed down by the supreme court from Macon county in the case of Smith, va South. era Express company, this law. has been upheld. We. therefore, memo rialize the next general assembly to act favorably on this measure and we request our presiding elder to present this memorial. We urge our people throughout the district to use their mnuence to elect members to the next general assembly who will favor this measure. "We note that in all likelihonA th'p present congress will take action upon tne resolution submitting national proWitbltion to the states and thniw. June 2fi A t-oiiu,o train that will attain a speed of up wards of three hundred milnn an nn is promised throueh an inventinn ia. cently exhibited to engineers and government officials in England. The inventor is Kmile Bachelet who has lived for many years in Mount v. non, New York. In a report to the denartment of commerce, Deputv United sul General Carl R. Loop at London, states that great Interest has been aroused in engineering circles by the demonstration of a model ahnum h Its inventor. , The motive power is electricity, though the application in a commercial sense, la nuitA t nas Deen known for years that cer tain kinds of current exert a repell ing force on certain metals, and it is the application of thla force that the inventor nas utilized. The model consists of a minature car weighing about forty pounds, constructed of steel with an alumi num base, resting upon about thirty feet of track. Beneat the rails are electrlct coils, which when energized by an alternating current, exercise a repelling force upon the car sufficient to raise it a fraction of an inch above the rails. When thus suspended in me air the car is drawn along by electro magnets, or solenoids, whfeh span the track in the form of arches, through which the car nasspfl. Al though the car is raised above the track, four brushes attached to the car remain in contact with the rails and two other brushes make contact with an overhead grooved ralLT The system is operated through a switch board and the currents are directed at will by an operator. Opon the charging of the electric! colls the car is raised and held, sus pended through renellinx force of the current upon the aluminum base and th.e car is then drawn forward by the energizing of the colenolds or arches. When the car has passed half way through an arch the current Is au tomatically cut off and applied to the next arch. The inventor claims that there is no reason why a car operated under this system for commprrlnl uses should not be pulled through the air at the rate of three hundred miles an hour. The new system is stated to be simple la construction and sub ject to litUe deterioration in use. The cost of maintenance would be. small as the cars are without engines, wheels, bearings, gearings, arma tures, or commutators and require bo oiling and only a litUe repair or ad justment The elimination of frac tion not only makes Jiigb. speed pos sible but also serves to keep down Elon College, N. C, June 26.The first 'Sunday . school Chautauqua and school pf methods held in the United States by the Christian church 'will be held at Virginia Beach, Va July 28 and 26. For this purpose the Christian "church has leased the tents and Chautauqua buildings and grounds or tne Baptist church, located at.-.Vir-gioja Beach, Va. The Baptists will hold their Chautauqua the week pro ceeding. They have been holding such a school for the past few years and expect to enroll as many as 2,000 delegates This is the first institute of this kind" held by the Christian church as 'has been stated above, but it' is expected that as many as' 1,000 delegates .will be enrolled. A train can be started, checked or I stopped, by opening or closing the electric circuits. It is claimed that cars can be started every half min ute on the system without danger of collision, the location of each train being always shown by an electrical indicator that is constantly before the despatcher at either end of the ne. The power current scan be cut oft instantaneously and the traffic at any point or on the whole length of the line brought to a standstill. Trains also can be automatically sidetracked and stopped at any station. The model 'exhibited was a mail or parcels car not' Intended for passen gers. The inventor has constructed a model passenger car which is raised from the track in the manner de scribed, but in actual use the propell ing force will be furnished by means of a motor and propeller as in the case of an aeroplane. Engineers who have seen the svs tern operated in model form declare it is an amaaing achievement, but naturally speak with.' reserve as to its practical value: -The inventor claims that he has demonstrated, that his system is sound in principle and that Its -commercial utility depends only upon the necessary capital to build and operate a line.
