Abernethy Sunday school class of the Methodist church met in a business meeting at the church Monday evening, with Dr. R. B. Harrell, teacher, as host. Ap proximately thirty members oft- the class were present. During the business meeting Alan Browning, was elected president, - Miss "JosepElaa Paul, vice-president and Miss Edith Neayes, secretary-treas urer. . Punch and cookies were served during the social hour at the con clusion of the business session. Hemric-Spicer A wedding of interest to friends in this sertion is that of Miss Flora Hemric to Thomas Spicer, which was solemnized at Independence, Virginia, Saturday, September 23, 1933, with Rev. T. L. Funk offi ciating. The bride was attended by Miss Poley Hemric as maid of honor and Verlin Lyons served as best man. Only Intimate friends of the young couple witnessed the cer emony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hemric and the bridegroom is the Bon of Mr. and Mrs. A. Spicer, both of the Ronda commlnity. They will make their home at Austin. Mr. and Mrs. Allred Honored by Miss Eads Miss Ruth Eads was hostess to the members of her bridge club at the home of Mrs. William Price, on Church street, Saturday evening, complimenting Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Allred of Elkin and Mt. Airy, who ■were recently married. The honoree ■was presented with a lovely bed spread. Those making up the two tables were: Mr. and Mrs. Allred, Miss Sadie Franklin, Miss Bettie Allen, Miss Betty Harris, Miss Mary Hen dren, Miss Ophelia Paul and Miss Eads. At the conclusion of the games a prettily-appointed ice course with numerous accessories was served. O. B. H. Club Resumes Meetings The O. B. H. Club met in the first meeting of the club year on Thurs day evening, with Miss Bettie Allen as hostess at the home of Mrs. Marion Allen on Church street. During~the brief business meet ing "the new club books were selec ted and a former member. Miss Grace Cockerham, was welcomed back into the club. Hearts were played at three ta bles, with Miss Elizabeth Anderson winning the high score award. Mrs. J. H. Allred, a member of the club and a recent bride, was presented ■with a lovely set of crystal as a gift from the club members. H. Allred and Mrs. Marion Allen. Nan Johnson Honored On Tenth Birthday Anniversary Honoring her little niece, Nan Johnson, of Winston-Salem, who is spending the winter with her, Mrs. M. A. Biggs entertained at a delight ful party on Saturday afternoon, in celebration of the tenth birthday anniversary of the honoree. Out door games were enjoyed, under the direction of Miss Beatrice Burcham. Peggy Royall was winner of the first prize in the games. Later the guests were invited into the living room, where they fished for prizes and each one was given' a lovely souvenir. A color scheme of pink and blue was carried out in detail in the din ing room, where a pretty birthday setting was effected, with a large decorated cake with ten lighted candles as the central attraction. Ices and cakes were served the lit tle guests and favors were dainty pink baskets filled with candy. Those enjoying the afternoon with little Miss Johnson were: Eleanor Hayes, Peggy Royall, Dorothy Jean Salmons, Pansy and Camilla Burch am, "Maxine Allridge, Sarah Lee Griffeth, Dorothy and Mary Ellen Harrell and Mary Elizabeth Allen. Mr. and Mrs. William Reece Cele brate Fortieth Wedding Anniversary A doubly significant celebration was held at the «bome of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Reece in Jonesville, Sunday, when Mr. and Mrs. Reece celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary with a family reunion. Only the immediate family of Mr. and Mrs. Reece, including their eight children and twenty-four grandchildren, were present. An elaborate wedding dinner was prepared by the members of the family and served Southern style from the huge table. Mr. Reece is 74 years old and Mrs. Reece is 58, and they are one of the most highly esteemed cou ples in this community. During their forty years residence in Jones ville they have been leaders in civic and religious activities. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Reece present for the event were: Mrs. Walter Wright, Yadkin county; Mrs. Horace Feimster, Winston-Sa lem; Mrs. William Hudspeth, El kin; Mrs. Marvin Mayberry, Mrs. Talmage Blackburn, Mrs. Clyde Shugart and L 3 Reece of Jones ville and William Reece, Jr., of Winston-Salem. HARTSELL Former Jonesville Police Chief Dies In Hospital Funeral services for Dr. Eli Franklin HartselL 56, who died Friday in a Morganton hospital, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Jonesville Baptist church, in charge of Rev. D. G. Reece of Jonesville and Rev. J!ph Whisenhunt, pastor of the First Baptist church of Elkin. Interment was in the Jonesville cemetery. The deceased was a veterinary surgeon by profession and for sev eral years was chief of police of the town of Jonesville. He had been a patient in the Morganton hospital for several months, suffering from a nervous disorder, due to a long period of ill health. L TO OPEN FOOTBALL SEASON Will Meet Children's Home Here Saturday Afternoon Mountain Park Institute football team will meet the gridiron forces of the Children's Home, of Winston- Salem, here at Riverside park Sat urday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Both teams are said to have un usually good material this year and the game is expected to provide many thrills. It will mark the opening of the season for M. P. I. Other games on the M. P. Plans for developing a $2,000,000 federal coastal park in Northeastern North Carolina were outlined at Raleigh last Thursday by Frank Stick, of Manteo, chairman of a council that will seek to interest the goverment in the project. ■» Methodist Stewards To Meet Saturday The Stewards of the Methodist churches, comprising the Joneßvllle charge, -will meet for the annual supper at the Jonesville parsonage next Saturday evening, September 30, at 6:30. Rev. L. B. Abernethy of Elkin, and Mr. L. F. Amburn of Boonville, associate district lay leader, will be the speakers for the pccasion. The Woman's Missionary Society of the Jonesville Methodist church will serve the supper. WAGES INCREASE f12,000,000 IN MONTH A $12,000,000 increase in the pay rolls of manufacturers operating under the NRA codes and agree ments during the month July 16- August 18, was reported Thursday by Secretary of Labor Perkins. Pig urea gathered by trained statisti cians formed the basis for the re port which is the "first real infor mation distinct from 'ballyhoo' we have had," Miss Perkins said.
