Comer, presided. The meeting open
ed with the club song "With Joy We

A large number responded to the roll

last meeting were read by the secre
tary Miss Elizabeth Norman. Re

were given and approved. Miss
Comer introduced Dr. Ernst Deren
dinger, of Catawba College, Salis

by way of an illustrated lecture on
"The Resurection of Christ", entitled
"The Easter Story." Dr. Derendin
ger's lecture was inspirational as
well as entertaining. Rev. J. W. Cox

during this splendid lecture and the
following social hour. Refreshments
were served by the entertainment
committee, Mesdames Emma Reece
Mock, W. M. Jackson, C. G. Comer,

Mexican Bean Beetle
Costly Farm Pest
Again this season, growers of snap
beans, butter or lima beans will be
faced with the problem of controlling
the Mexican Bean beetle, said to be
one of the most troublesome of
North Carolina's insect pests.
"This beetle feeds on the under
side of the bean leaves and usually
the larvae as well as the adult in
sect will be found feeding on a
plant," says C. H. Brannon, exten
sion entomologist at State College.
"When the infestation is severe, all
parts of the bean plant above the
ground are fed upon and the plant
may be completely destroyed. Injury
to cowpeas and soybeans is also bad
but the beetles rarely feed upon the
stems and pods of these plants."
In controlling the bean beetle, Mr.
Brannon warns growers to keep in
mind that the plant is very tender
and can easily be injured by strong
poisons. He says the right poison
must be used and it must be applied
in exacts amounts. The poison must
also reach the under-side of the
leaves.
Where the beans are grown in
small areas as in a garden, five
level tablespoonsful of magnesium
arsenate to three gallons of water
makes a good spray for beetle con
trol. A mixture for large areas may
be prepared by using one pound of
the rriagnesium arsenate to 50 gal- !
lons of water applied at the rate of
about 90 to 100 gallons of the mix
ture to an acre of beans.
Mr. Brannon recommends that
treatment begin as soon as the beet-1
les appear in the field and if the in
sects are numerous, the treatments
should be repeated every week or ten
days. Often three or four applica- 1
tions are necessary, but, usually, two
careful sprayings are sufficient for
snap beans.

SERVICE BY PUBLICATION
The defendant above named will
take notice that an action entitled
Why
Liquid Laxatives
are Back in Favor
The public is fast returning to the use
of liquid laxatives. People have
learned that the right dose of a
properly prepared liquid laxative will
bring a perfect movement without
any discomfort at the time, or after.
The dose of a liquid laxative can
be varied to suit the needs of the
individual. The action can thus be
regulated. A child is easily given the
right dose. And mild liquid laxatives
do not irritate the kidneys.
Doctors are generally agreed that
senna is a natural laxative. It does
not drain the system like the cathar
tics that leave you so thirsty. Dr.
Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is a liquid
laxative which relies on senna for its
laxative action. It gently helps the
average person's bowels back to
regularity.
You can always get Dr. Caldwell's 1
Syrup Pepsin at any drug store, ready
for use. Member N. R A.
