Lucy Hanes Chatham
Club Began With But
One Member; Now 153
(By JOHN SAGAR)
Inasmuch as such an institu
tion as the Lucy Hanes Chatham
Club should be a matter of great
pride to every member of this
community, whether they are di
rectly connected with it or not, it
is with considerable satisfaction
that a short history of the club,
its aims and what it has already
achieved, is brought to readers of
this newspaper.
In 1929 Miss Claudia Austin
and Miss Lorena Kelly, both
members of the Century church,
of Winston-Salem, were discuss
ing church welfare work in which
both had had considerable ex
perience. Miss Kelly told Miss
Austin that she intended to start
a welfare club among the girls at
the Chatham Manufacturing Co..
and asked Miss Austin if she
would like to take charge of it.
Miss Austin readily assented, so
the matter was discussed with
Thurmond Chatham, who offer
ed to do everything in his ppwer
to further the idea. As a result,
Miss Austin accepted a position
in the Winston office where she
could come in contact with the
girls. The result was that after
a few months the first meeting
of the club was called and one
member, Miss Betty Gentry, was
enrolled. At the next meeting
five more members enrolled and
since that time the club has
grown until now the Winston
club alone numbers 60 members
who meet every week in their
club room at the Centenary
church.
Mrs. Lucy Hanes Chatham
took such a profound interest in
the club and did so much to fur
ther its aims that it was decided
with her permission that the club
should be named after her, and
probably only its members can
fully realize how much her kind
and sincere interest and help
have meant to them.
Every week classes are con
ducted in cooking, sewing, art,
interior decorating, English and
music. Each class is in charge
of an experienced teacher. Sports
such as tennis, soft ball, volley
ball and basket ball are encour
aged, and the club even boasts of
a riding school.
In 1932 the Lucy Hanes Chat
ham club was organized by Miss
Austin in the Elkin mill, and has
a membership of 93 girls. The
club is run on the same lines as
the Winston club and meets at
the Methodist church each week.
It selects a program committee
each year; its meetings are con
ducted according to parliament
ary law, and along educational
and spiritual lines. Once a
month lectures are given on var
ious subjects by competent au
thorities, and camping trips and

hikes are organized whenever the
girls feel so inclined.
Miss Austin and the Lucy
Hp.nes Chatham club are respon
sible for the starting of that ex
cellent mill paper—The Chatham
Blanketeer, and every reporter on
its staff is a member of the club.'
The purpose of the club as
written into its by-laws Are
worthy of such an institution.
They are: "To create a more
friendly feeling among the girls
working for Chatham Manufac
turing Co., and to promote phy
sical, mental and spiritual and
social development among its
members." With such aims as
ably carried out as they have
been and are being, it is no won
der that Mr. and Mrs. Chatham
and all those connected with the
Chatham Manufacturing Co., are
intensely fond of the Lucy Hanes
Chatham club, as it does much to
develop the personality and char
acter of young women, who, after
all, form an important part of
the foundation of the commun
ity and nation.
Miss Austin has worked hard
on behalf of the club, but she in
sists that she is amply repaid by
the fine spirit the girls have
shown in availing themselves of
the opportunities for their men
tal, spiritual, physical and so
cial betterment.

A mountain preacher, of Sylva,
twisted in agony but refusing medical

his faith in God against a rattle

body had diminished somewhat and
he seemed definitely on 'the road to
recovery.
