THE BLKIN TRIBUNE, EIAIN, NORTH CAROLINA HEALTH ■NOTES SURRY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT RALPH J. SYKES, M. D., Health Officer CHILD HEALTH The deaths of infants under one year constitute a sensitive index of health conditions in a community,. Life is most precarious in its earliest hours and days. The most hazard ous days in the life of the human being are those immediately follow ing birth. In the first thirty days occur approximately one half of all deaths before the end of the first year of life. The causes of these in fant deaths are principally prema ture birth, malformations of devel opment, contagious diseases includ ing pneumonia; and to a much les ser extent than formerly, digestive upsets. There were 972 live births in Surry County in 1935 with 48 deaths of babies under one month and 31 deaths under one year. Scientific care of the expectant mother and of the infant, safe wa ter and milk, and protection against contagious diseases and accidents constitute ttye most important fac tors which contribute to safe birth and low infant mortality. Twenty years ago the most dan gerous period of the year for in fants was summer. Many parents still dread the child's second sum mer because of the great danger of digestive upsets, often with fatal re sults, which they expect at that time. Today we need not fear the second summer. In fact, we may look forward to summer. We now know that the infant will thrive in fresh air and sunlight much better than indoors. The fear of the sec ond summer has been dissipated by a knowledge of the causes which brought about disease. it was not summer itself which was bad for ba bies, though it is true that mothers often overdressed babies, and they did suffer from the heat. What really killed babies was dirty milk, impure water and lack of steriliza tion of infant's foods. Now that mo thers have learned aboiit clean hands, sterile bottles, sterile nipples, boiled water and pasteurization of milk reboiled before feeding, babies frolic through their second summer, GENERAL ® ELECTRIC REF.RIGtRATOR mm I | 41 M 3■iimp i i \ m ° ■ n v!LUM act ,]KTW kr |A i I'J I 3 i 1. 1 #4 1 V 1 . i i I fl ,-.» B - M » u ■ m ii II M 1 il 111 i m L]^JJ e i J M V^L^^2SBP^^7VI « B | 1 ft l 1 ' I I \ i/1 vtl lit JH » I A 11*1 r* o ■ignP^ i aT7 \\\ 11 > I Uh I -.. C. __ 0 I ■■ i stronger and healthier because of it. We still fear winter, however. Win ter is the season for colds, measles, diphtheria, scarlet fever and pneu monia. These diseases'are now tak ing the heaviest toll of babies, sec ond only to premature birth. In winter it is difficult to give the baby fresh air without two much expos ure. Houses are often overheated and almost always too dry. Well meaning people with colds kiss ba bies and perhaps kill them, all un wittingly. Children come in to play, suffering with early , symptoms of contagious diseases to which the ba by is exposed. Something can now be done about the danger of at least two contagions: namely, smallpox and diphtheria. Both are positively preventable and should be a thing of the past. The necessity for early care of ev ery pregnant woman cannot be overemphasized. Many of the com plications of pregnancy can be pre vented or minimized through scien tific care of the expectant mother. The lives of many mothers and in fants can be saved only by this method. When the child gets into school the results of disease and of physical defects which have developed in the course of the runabout or preschool age usually appear, if these condi tions can be corrected before the child enters school, much loss of school time will be prevented and much inefficiency in the schools eli minated. and the children will be healthier, happier students. The club did not sponsor the event. EHRINGHAUS SASSES KERR Raleigh, May 3.—Governor Eh *inghaus tonight shot about 1,200 words, many of them sizzling ones, at Representative John H.
