Thursday, March 18, 1937 NEW BERN HAS LONG LIST TIRSTS' Month Set Aside for Resi dents to Brush Up on City's Lore 2ND OLDEST CITY IN N. C. New Bern, March 6.—This little city at the union of the Neuse and Trent rivers, which can celebrate some significant anniversary al most any day, has set aside the month of March for residents to learn more about them. A group of Germans and Swiss, led by Baron Christopher de Graffenrled, settled here in 1710 on land granted by England's Queen Anne. They named their settlement after Switzerland's Berne and started in on a career of "firsts." Among notable events claimed for New Bern are: First civic celebration, any where, of George Washington's birthday (in 1799, almost ten months before he dud). . First observance in North Car olina of Independence Day (in 1788). First revolving-chamber pistol (made In 1829 by James Gill, a silversmith). First incorporated school in North Carolina (opened 1764). First provincial convention (in 1774). First North Carolina legisla ture met here (1777). First state governor was sworn in here. New Bern prides itself on being the only place to American where two dioceses of the Episco pal church have been formed (North Carolina in 1817, East Carolina in 1883) The oldest thfl|jp% still operat ing in the united States is here. The first road built in the State connected New Bern with Bath, first town. (New Bern is second town.) This is the home of George Isaac Hughes, who is claimed to be America's oldest father. When the new deal built its $325,000 post office here, that was claimed as the handsomest (colo nial architecture) second-class post office in the country. It re cently became a first-class office. The Swiss government gave New Bern three iron Berne bears at the bicentennial celebration. They were all on the city hall tower until last year. Then one was put up above the entrance of the fire station. Because of its architecture, New Bern is sometimes likened to Salem, Mass. It is often called a "miniature" of Charleston, S. C. Commenting on his proclama tion of "New Bern history month" for residents to brush up on their city's lore. Mayor w. C. Chad wlck said today: "We believe this is the first such plan in North Carolina." BURCH Rev. A.'B.
