Bee son will be presented in a public recital in the elementary school auditorium Thursday evening, March 18. at 7:45. The numbers will be Interspersed with readings and vocal selections. A cordial in vitation Is extended the public to attend. • Baptist Inspirational Meeting Monday Afternoon The monthly inspirational meeting of the Women's Mission ary Union of the First Baptist church will be held in the church parlor Monday afternoon, March 22, at 3:30. All members are re quested to attend. The Sunbeam Band will meet in the church auditorium on the same day and hour. Miss Gayer Is Hostess to Sunday School Class The Ready Class of the Sunday school of the First Baptist church met at the home of Miss Selma Guyer Thursday afternoon with eight members present. During the business hour It was decided that the meetings would be held In the afternoons Instead of evenings, as has been the cus tom heretofore. Tempting refreshments were served during a pleasant social hour. White-Sprinkle Announcement was made Sim day of the marriage of Miss Ha zel White and Paul Sprinkle. The vows were taken March 7, at In dependence, Va„ before Rev. L. D. Mayberry, pastor of the Meth odist church. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. White of North Elkin and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sprin kle. They are making their home at present with the bride's par ents. Engagement of Miss Nash and J. M. Reece Is Announced Of Interest to friends of Mr. Reece here is the following an nouncement from Sunday's Wins ton-Salem Journal: "Mr. and Mrs. Alphon Virgil Nash announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Ann Brown, to Joseph Montgomery Reece." The wedding will take place early in May. Mr. Reece is a native of Elkin and is the only son of the late Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Reece. For several years he has been making his home in Winston-Salem. Mason Lillard Class Meets Monday Evening The Mason Lillard Class of the Sunday school of the Methodist church met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Joe Bivins on Gwyn Avenue, with Miss Blanche Dixon associate hostess, with eight members present. Refreshments were served dur ing a pleasant social hour. i Miss Paul Is Hostess To O, B. H. Clab Tuesday Evening Miss Ophelia Paul delightfully entertained members of the O. B. H. Club at her home on Terrace Avenue Tuesday evening. Two tables were made up for rummy. The appointments of the tables and the deccraticps of the home were suggestive of . St. Patrick's Day. The club award for high score went to Miss Sadie Franklin at the conclusion of the play. An ice course, with individual decorated cakes, in which the St. Patrick motif was further accen tuated, and salted nuts were served late In the evening. Mrs. Stuart Is Hostess To S. S. Class Tuesday The Young Matrons' Class of the Sunday school of the First Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. L. M. Stuart Tuesday evening, with seventeen members and • one visitor present. Mrs. Leslie Relnhardt read the scrip ture lesson and the opening pray er was by Mrs. George Adams. The program consisted of a reading, "Martha's Prayer," by Mrs. T. L. Parnell. During a pleasant social hour the hostess, assisted by Mrs John pilliam, served delicious refresh ments, effectively carrying out the Easter motif. Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood Celeb - brate fifty-Fourth Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Ed Greenwood, prominent and well-known citi zens who reside east of Elkin, cel ebrated their fifty-fourth wed ding anniversary Sunday, March 14, with a family dinner. Sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood attending were: Mrs. Carl Chappell of this city, Miss Jennie Greenwood, Irvy, John, Banner and Jim Green wood, all of near Elkin. Two daughters, Mrs. Lee Layne of Ramseur and Mrs. Amos Sheppard of Dover, Deleware, were the only members of the immediate family not present. Mrs. Johnson Honored at Party by Mesdames Hayes and Freeman Honoring Mrs. Harry L. John son of Hickory, who was the guest last week of Mrs. J. R. Poindex ter, Mesdames Errol Hayes and R. C. Freeman were hostesses at an enjoyable informal bridge-lunch eon Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Hayes on Church street. Upon the arrival of the guests at ten o'clock, bridge was played at two tables. The high score award went to Mrs. J. R. Poindexter. Mrs. Johnson was also presented a lovely remembrance. Four additional guests came in for luncheon at one o'clock. Party j church enjoyed a delightful skating party Saturday evening. Surry Avenue was roped off for the skaters and the sport was en- Joyed for several hours. After wards the guests were served doughnuts and hot chocolate at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Alexander. Sponsors of the party were Mrs. I. C. Yates, Mrs. E. C. James, Miss Blendon Byrd and C. R. Alexander. T. L. Parnell, director of the B. 7 P. U. was a special guest. Approximately thirty-five mem bers of the association enjoyed the event. Long-Gentry Of Interest to friends of the young couple is the announcement of the wedding of Miss Alva Gen try of State Road to Ted Long of Jonesville. They were married in a quiet ceremony Sunday after noon, March 7, at the home of the bride's parents, with Rev. E. G. Jordon officiating using the ring service. Only the immediate families witnessed the ceremony. The bride was becomingly dressed in a spring suit of brown with white accessories. Mrs. Long is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Gentry of State Road, and is a graduate of Elkin high school. Mr. Long is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Long of Jonesville. Mr. and Mrs. Long will be tem porarily at home with the bride groom's parents. Demonstration Club Meets With Mrs. Folger Cockerham A meeting of the Mountain Park Home Demonstration club was held Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Folger Cockerham at State Road, with sixteen mem bers present. Mrs. I. O. Wallace, club presi dent, presided over the business session, which featured routine matters. Mrs. W. W. Tollison, chairman of the foods and nutrition com mittee, presented a well prepar ed paper on diets appropriate to the season to insure better health. "Wood Violets and Spring Clothes" was the topic of a paper presented by Mrs. J. F. Thomp son. Miss Vera Staunton, home dem onstration agent for the county, made a short talk on "Color In the Home." A tempting refreshment course was served by the hostess during a pleasant social hour at the con clusion of the program. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Paul Brown at Devotion, on April 7th. (Jj, 'A. Lunch eon was served at one o'clock and during the afternoon bridge was enjoyed. The St. Patrick motif was accentuated in the appoint ments of the tempting luncheon. At the close of a series of In tel esting games the club award for high schore was presented Mrs. E. S. Spalnhou ". Mrs. Harry L. Johnson of Hickory and Mrs. J. Ralph Recce of Knoxville, Tenn., out of town guests, were each given a lovely remembrance. Members playing were: Mes dames James Poindexter, Paul Owyn, E. S. Bpatnhour, C. L. Haywood, Jr., and Ruohs Pyron. Additional guests were: Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Reece and Mrs. R C. Freeman. Mary Frances Combs Honored on Twelfth Birthday Miss Mary Frances Combs was honored on her twelfth birthday anniversary Saturday when her mother, Mrs. W. H. Combs, enter tained in the afternoon at a sur prise party at their home at State Road. The home was decorated with spring flowers and symbols of St. Patrick's Day. Games and contests were enjoyed, with at tractive prizes going to Doris Pruitt and Juanita Carter. A handsome birthday cake, decorated in green and white and bearing twelve gleaming candles was the central decoration in the dining room, where the guests were invited for refreshments. Ices, cake and lemonade were ser ved. Favors were green and white baskets in St. Patrick design, fill ed with candles. The guest list included the hon oree and the following friends: Juanita and Helen Carter, Cleta and Loreta Jenkins, Billy, Myrtle Peggy and Wayne Walters, Billy Donnovan, Billy Dickerson, Irene and J. E. Mosteller, Doris Prultt, Lucy Wolfe, Gladys and Hazel Blevins and Betty Ann Combs. Legion Auxiliary Entertains Legionnaires Tuesday Evening Celebrating the eighteenth birthday of the organization of the American Legion, mem bers of the Woman's Auxiliary of the George Gray Post were hostesses to members of the Legion here Tuesday evening. The meeting was held in the Kiwanis room at Hotel Elkin with approx imately sixty guests in attendance, Including members of both organ izations, eligible members and a few outside friends. Mrs. George Royall, president of the Auxiliary, presided over the preamble and salute to the flag. In keeping with the pro-, gram outlined for the month, she) touched briefly on accomplish ments of the Auxiliary in com munity service during the past year. Following her talk she in troduced Mrs. C. E. Nicks, guest speaker, who spoke in a most in- j teresting manner on the phases of community service pertaining to schools. Her talk was well re ceived. A vocal solo "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," by Mrs. J. H. Beeson, accompanied at the piano by Miss Effle Crater, con cluded the program. A social hour followed. A num ber of old fashioned games and contests were enjoyed. Punch and sandwiches were served. The room was decorated with American flags and spring flow ers and the punch table was dec orated with Shamrock, suggestive of St. Patrick's Day. A hand some two-tier birthday cake, adorned with American flags and eighteen candles, was awarded Rev. Wm. A. Jenkins, who was fortunate in drawing the lucky number. COOL SPRINGS Quite a bit of excitement was caused during the preaching hour at our church Sunday when the building caught on fire, the blaze had gained considerable headway when discovered. No fireman ever slid down a greased pole quicker than the men and boys jumped to extinguish the fire. A bucket brigade was on duty in two minutes and the blaze was soon under control. Jay Myers suffered a slight strain from carrying a ten gallon cooler of water up the steep ladder un aided. It was voted in church confer ence Saturday to cover the other side of our church building Thursday. More than nineteen squares of roofing will be re quired for this, several squares were donated Saturday but not nearly enough. The flue will be rebuilt this week thus removing further fire hazard. Pet tyjohn, Elkin, N. C. Two plans have ueen submitted to date for proposed Sunday school class rooms. One by A. C. Wall, the other by Paul Newman. Mi-. Wall proposed a double gal lery of rooms in the present build ing, with folding walls to open these when occasion required to the public. Mr. Newman proposed a six room addition at the end and side of church building, two rooms of which would be available as added space when needed. Mr. and Mrs. John Burton of Winston-Salem were Sunday guests of Mrs. Burton's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Holbrook. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Burton, Mr. Burton's parents; during the af ternoon several friends of the former Miss Asper Holbrook call ed. Mr. Howard Key and mother, Mrs. J. D. Key were among the visitors at our church Sunday, however, owing to general ex citement and interrupted service we failed to get the names of some of those with us. Messrs. O. P. Holbrook, M. L. Pettyjohn and R. C. Harris visited "Uncle Calvin" Hemric of Yad kin Monday, they also called on their pastor Rev. I. W. Vestal who resides near Mr. Hemric. Mr. and Mrs. Barney Smith of Leaksville were week-end guests of Mrs. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wishon. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Newman and family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Harris Sunday evening. The modern Robinson Crusoe would be happy. He wouldn't have to fill out all kinds of gov ernment blanks. Boarding houses are coming back, says an authority.
