? Thqrsdiay, March 25. 1917 NEWS FROM THE Dobson, March 22.—The Wom an's Club of Dobson met In the club room Thursday evening, with the president, Mrs. W. E. Han cock, in the chair. Meeting opened with the club song, fol lowed by the coMect, by the entire club. After the roll call and minutes of the February meeting, the var ious committees and departments gave reports which were in turn passed upon and adopted. The club voted to donate a prize to the children who win to represent the Dobson high school in the Small Farm For Sale 3.2 acres of good farm land located in Ed wards Township, Wilkes, County, former ly owned by J. Mrs. C. W. Fowler was the winner of the attendance prize. Subject for the month, by way of entertainment, "literature for the Home." Miss Verdye Jackson,; program leader. Introduced four of her high school seniors, who ap peared on the program as fol lows: "Southern Literature," Wil fred Moser; Review of "Gone With the Wind," Miss Mary Coop er; "Three Outstanding North Carolinians, John Charles McNeill, Wm. Sidney Porter and Paul Oreene," by Annie Pearl Gentry. Miss Dixie Stanley read several poems set to music, accompanied at the piano by Miss Edythe Reece. Miss Jackson, next, very cleverly introduced Mrs. Charles Hyatt, of Pilot Mountain, who, in her charming manner read several of her original poems. Mrs. Hyatt is a very gifted poetess, and has won ihe loving cup .given by the Federa tion to the writer of the best poem written by a club woman, 'three times. She was presented a pot of beautiful hyacinths in be half of the Woman's Club, for her splendid contribution to the evening's program. During the social hour ice cream and cake were served by the following committee: Miss Jackson, chairman, Mrs. W. E. Hancock, Miss Alma Floyd, Miss Evelyn Veasey, Mrs. H. D. Broome, Miss Eva Hancock and Mrs. C. W. Fowler. Attorney J. T. Benbow of Win ston-Salem, was in town Friday on legal business. Clerk of Court F. T. Lewellyn, is able to be at his office again, and his friends will be glad to know he is steadily improving. Mrs. F. F. Riggs entertained the Council of Woman's Club on Monday evening. A splendid play, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," was given in the school auditorium Friday ev ening, by Mr. and Mrs. Sauline and their cast of characters. The play was well rendered. Proceeds to go for school necessities and a per cent to the players. Mrs. George Ried of Pilot Mountain, was a guest of the Wo man's Club Thursday evening. She is president of the Federation of her town. A large crowd of farmers were in attendance at Dobson Friday, to receive their government checks for soil improvement from the county agent, J. W. Craw ford. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith went to Statesville Sunday after noon, to visit Mrs. Wodruff, who is a patient in the hospital there. Mrs. S. K. Harkrader and Mrs. Maggie Lewellyn spent Saturday in Winston-Salem. j BURCH Rev. I. C. Woodruff of Moun tain View, preached at Little Richmond Baptist church Satur day. Mr. Woodruff is a former pastor of the church and is al ways a welcome visitor in this community. Rev. A. B. Hayes of Mountain View, filled his regular appoint ment at Little Richmond Baptist church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Charlie Humpries was elected superintendent of the Sunday school here to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of M. O. Sneed, who recently moved to El kin. A house to house canvass for better attendance at the Sun day school is being made and a cordial invitation is extended all people of the community to at tend. Mrs. Porter Dodson has return ed from North Elkin, where she spent last week visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Greenwood of North Wilkesboro, spent the week-end here with Mr. Gree~ wood's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Greenwood. Rev. I. C. Wodruff of Mc' View, and Paul Burch of * tain Park, were week-end ifuests of Mr. and Mrs. U. Burch. Rev. E. G. Jordan of Elkin, will preach at Bessie's Chapel Bap tist church Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Slate and daughter, of Winston-Salem, spent the week-end at Union Cross, with Mr. and Mrs. Grant Dobbins. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sneed had as their Sunday guests, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Burton and Mr. and Mrs. Coney Burton and family, of Union Cross, and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Sneed and son, of Winston- Salem. Rev. E. B. Draughan of Union Cross, will preach at Little Rich mond v Baptist church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Minton of Friendship, announce the birth of a son, Friday, March 19. A singing convention will be held at Bessie's Chapel Sunday, April 28. Choirs, quartettes and other singers of sacred music are invited to take part in the service. RUSK Mrs. L. P. Dodson came home Monday, after spending several days at Elkln with friends. Messrs. John and Gilmer Cord er, with Mr. and Mrs. Kermlt Corder attended the funeral of Mr. Alex Gentry at Friendship church last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Davis, Jr., and small son, Whitt, of Mount Airy, were here a short while Fri day, enroute to their home from North Wilkesboro. Miss Florence Wall, member of the school faculty, spent the week-end at Zephyr, with her parents. Mrs. Luther Amburn of Boon ville, was the Sunday guest of Mrs. Ma D. Burch. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Jenkins and children of State Road, were among the Sunday visitors here. Miss Mattle Ruth Wllmoth re- turned to Winston-Salem Mon day, after spending the week-end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Wilmoth and family. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Greenwood of North Wilkesboro, were among the week-end visitors here. Miss Rachael Burch of Greens boro, was here Thursday the guest of home-folks. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Green wood and Mr. Lester Sloop of the Friendship section, were here Saturday. Miss Ruth Winfrey of Greens boro. was a week-end visitor here. Mr. R. A. Jenkins of Winston- Salem, spent Sunday and Mon day here with his family. Little Miss Joan Olsen, with little Misses Betty Jean and Tom my Darnell of Elkin, were here Saturday, the guests of their grandmother, Mrs. W. S. White. Miss Sue Burch returned to. Greensboro Tuesday, after spend ing a week with her mother, Mrs. Ila Burch and family. Mr. Gene Reynolds of Greens boro, was a week-end visitor here. Rev. A. B. Hayes and Rev. I. C. Woodruff of Hays, were overnight guests of Mrs. Vance Burch, Sat urday. BETHEL Ronda, Route 2, March 25. — Mrs. C. L. Morrison is spending some time with her daughter and family, Mrs. Weaver Hinson. Mr. G. F. Pardue miraculously escaped injury last Thursday when his team of mules ran away while they were hitched to a big plow, dragging the plow over his body. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Triplett and their foster son, Clay, visited Mrs. Triplett's brother, D. R. Gilliam, in Winston last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Gilliam and sons, Flake, Charles and Bobby, were the guests of relatives at Roaring River last Sunday after noon. Mrs. Elza St. John, who has been right sick, is some better, we are glad to note. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Charles T.
