MAKES REPORT ON PROBABLE ACREAGE Purpose Is to Assist Growers Generally in Making Changes in Plans POTATOES SLIGHTLY UP The crop reporting board of the department of agriculture at Washington made a report recent ly on the indicated acreage for harvest in 1937 of certain crops, based upon reports from farmers in all parts of the country to the department on or about March 1 regarding their acreage inten tions for the 1937 season. The purpose of this report Ist to assist growers generally in mak ing such further changes in their acreage plans as may appear de sirable. Plans with regard to sweet po tatoes arc not very definite this early in the season, but they show a nominal decrease of 2 per cent. The intended increase In tobacco acreage Is reported to be 15 per cent, with much larger in creases in certain types that are most in demand. With this in crease the total tobacco acreage would still be about 10 per cent below the 1928-32 Average. Flue cured tobacco growers in tend to Increase the acreage of this class of tobacco about 10 per cent above that harvested in 1936. This increase would result in an area of 967,800 acres, which would still be about 2 per cent less than the five year (1938-32) average and about 15 per cent less than the record acerage grown in 1930. Burley growers intend to in crease the acreage of this type of tobacco about 31 per cent above the 1936 acreage. Even with this increase, however, the 1937 burley acreage would be about 5 per cent below the five year (1928-32) average, and 19 per cent below the record acreage grown in 1931. Reports from growers indicate a prospective total acreage of peanuts for all purposes of 2,- 098,000 acres, exclusive of those grown with com and other crops. The intended acreage, largest on record is 2 per cent higher than the acreage grown alone last year and compares with a five year (1928-32) average of 1,702,600 acres.
