SURPRISE! We reckon it's all right to tell it, anyway we'll take a chance. * Not so many weeks ago, down in the jail at Yadkinville, there was a big fellow who had been locked up for drunken ness, and who, when he had reached the crying, slobbering stage, began to feel terrible sorry for himself. He felt so sorry, and allowed his self pity to so prey on his mind, that he decided that everyone else should also be sorry for him. However, jailers are accustomed to drunks, and no grain of pity was forthcoming, which fact proved very irk some to the drunk. Thinking upon* the matter, he decided he would just up and commit suicide (or make them think he was going to), and then they would be sor ry. No sooner said than done. Sure that the eye of his cellmate, a big, devil-may-care type of fellow, was upon him, and making sure also that the jailer was close by, he began his preparations to leave' Radio Service BY AN EXPERT , RADIO SERVICE MAN Complete Line of Tubes and Parts Hayes & Speas (Incorporated) PHONE 70 ELKIN, N. First .he took off his belt and necktie, which he joined together to make a crude but serviceable noose. One end he fastened to an iron bar in the ceiling of his cell. Then, turning a bucket bottom side up, he climbed upon it and fastened the noose about his neck. The drunk had no idea in the 'world of really hanging himself. right as far as the jailer was con cerned. For uo sooner did he see what was going on, than he started on a run for the cell. __i But before he could get there the drunk's cellmate, who was thoroughly tired of his compan ion and his threats to end it all, kicked the bucket from under him! And boy! was that a lesson. He was darn near choked to death by the time the jailer unlocked the cell and cut him down. * • • LETTER Dear Sir: I noticed in a recent issue of The Tribune that you are adver tising a so-called "mechanical man" as a feature attraction of the amateur show that's to be put on in Elkin within the next cou ple of weeks. I was especially In terested in the statement that it will be seven feet tall and will be operated by remote control. It may interest you to know that up until the present time only a very few mechanical men —or robots, as I believe they are called—have been created, and these were made by skilled elec trical engineers and scientists. These robots, while working in a ,crude way, have-been far from perfect. It is with this thought in mind that I question "Mekko, the Me chanical Man," as you have been pleased to call him. Mechanical men cost thousands of dollars and many months of work must go in to the creation of one. Therefore, I say you are planning to hoax the public in your amateur show. Yours truly, J. H. C. • • • Nice of you to call us up, Mr. J. H. C., and although you ap pear to know your robots, you don't know our Mekko. We have been in the advertising business for quite a number of years, and one of the first things we learned When we say "Mekko, the Me chanical Man" will appear on the stage of the Lyric theatre on the night of Friday, May 14, we mean just that. When we say he is sev en feet tall, we are speaking gen erally, because he may be over seven feet or an inch or two under —it all depends, actual measure ment having not as yet been made. And when we say he will be operated by remote control, we are speaking only the truth. If you dont believe it, be present that night and see for yourself. Because up to the present no robot has been made to perform 100 per cent successfully is no reason to believe that "Mekko" won't. We don't claim that he will, bus if he should we wouldn't be at all surprised. So take it or leave it. What you think about the matter doesn't make very mucft difference one way or the other.
