Bankers . Convention in Pinehurst.
Miss Frances Chatham left this
morning for Campbellsville, Ken
tucky, where she will visit Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Gwyn Chat
ham, the former her brother, and
attend the Kentucky Derby at
Louisville, on Saturday.
Mrs. C. C. Poindexter, Mrs. J.
R. Poindexter, Mrs. C. H. Brewer
and Mrs. R. B. Harrell visited a
number of private gardens in
Winston-Salem Tuesday which
were opened to the public under
the auspices of the Twin City Gar
den Clubs.
Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Spainhour
left Wednesday for Lexington,
Ky., where they will visit Mr.
and Mrs. John White. Prom there
they will go to Louisville for the
Kentucky Derby. They will also
visit in Cincinnati before return
ing home. They expect to be away
ten days.
Mr. and Mrs. Clay Church
will leave the latter part of the
week for Marion, Virginia, to
make their home. Mr. Church will
be in charge of the Dr. Pepper
bottling plant there. Mr. and Mrs.
Church have a host of friends
here who regret to see them go
elsewhere to reside.
Mrs. B. P. Miller of Sedgefield,
spent the week-end here with her
sister, Mrs. E. P. McNeer, at her
home on Church street. She was
accompanied to Winston-Salem
Tuesday by Mrs. McNeer and
Mrs. Marion Allen, who visited a
number of private gardens which
were open to the public on that
day.
Henry Smoot, of Monroe Mich.,
arrived Monday to visit his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Smoot.
He was accompanied by Everette
Bishop and Henry Johnson, who
joined Mesdames Bishop and
Johnson, who have been spending
sometime here with their parents
Mr. and Mrs. Smoot. They will
return to Monroe early next week.

Greenwood, Mary Elizabeth Allen
and Dorothy Harrell were guests
Saturday of Miss Johnson's aunt,
Mrs. Delia Walker, in Winston-
Salem, at a luncheon at the Wo
man's Club. In the afternoon the
party, accmpanied by a group of
friends from Winston-Salem, at
tended the May Day fete at Sa
lem College.
Mrs. Carl Poindexter was in
formed Monday night' of the
sudden death of her brother-in
law, Frank G. Leek, in St. Peters
burg, Florida. Mrs. Leek was be
fore her marriage Miss Lillian
Edgerton of Quilford College, and
is a sister of Mrs. Poindexter.
Mr. and Mrs. Poindexter will go
to Guilford College for the fun
eral service.
Mr. and Mrs. James Paul and
little daughter, Peggy, of Wil
mington, arrived yesterday to vis
it Mr. Paul's mother, Mrs. W. E.
Paul, on Terrace Avenue. Mr. and
Mrs. Paul will go to Winston-Sa
lem for the Reece-Nash wedding
this evening which will be sol
emnized in a church ceremony at
the First Baptist church. Mr.
Paul will serve as best man at the
wedding.

Mrs. Raymond Chatham, Mrs. W.
J. Price, Miss Virginia Price and'
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gwyn will go
to Winston-Salem this evening,
where they will be the guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Jessie B. Glenn at a
dinner party and later they will
attend the wedding of Joe Reece
and Miss Anne Brown Nash at
the First Baptist church. Mr.
Reece is a native of Elkin.

sense of comedy, will appear as
one of the feature performers in
the WSM Barn Dance unit which
will play at the New Elk Theatre
here Tuesday, May 11, matinee,
night and midnight. So many re
quests are received at WSM for
this number of Robert's that he
has repeated It each week for two
or three years.
Robert is a country boy, who
would rather plunk his guitar at
the cross roads than eat. His re
pertoire consists of more than one
hundred novelty numbers. He has
been featured in the WSM Satur
day night shindig for several
years.

were present. Among our visitors
was Miss Ruth Pruett of Trap
hill.

appointment here Sunday even
ing, taking as his subject, "The
Son of Man hath not where to
lay his head." According to the
Word, says Mr. Hayes '.'Christ
will not lay his head where sin
and filth abound but only where
love invites and mercy dwells

The Saturday evening service
was in charge of A. C. Wall, who
conducted the devotional part
and followed with a bit of choir
training. Mr. Wall will sing again*
next Saturday evening.
A good congregation attended
the 8. S. convention at Old Rachel
Sunday afternoon. Most churches
of the convention being repre
sented. Several from the First
Baptist church of Elkin were
there. The address by Messrs.
Walker and James was highly
commended. Rev. Eph Whisen
hunt was there and we hoped for
a talk from him, however, Mr.
Whisenhunt merely expressed his
appreciation of the privilege of
fered but declined. The Cool
Springs quartette sang several
numbers, which were interspersed
by numbers by the home choir
and a special number by the lit
tle Howard sisters.
Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Holbrook
visited their daughter, Mrs. John
Burton of Winston-Salem and

ed the Lyric theatre Friday for
first hand information regarding
the projecting machines and
sound equipment. Tours of in
spection of local plants for infor
mation on subjects being studied
by the class has been a policy for
