On Border Market

Governor Clyde R. Hoey, of
North Carolina, visited the Lum
berton and Whiteville markets
and spoke to the assembled
throngs, including auctioneers,
warehousemen, buyers, growers
and spectators.
He commented that the outlook
for fair prices was promising and
said, "from a hasty inspection
and judging from the estimate of
experienced tobacco men, the
farmers of this section are en
gaged in harvesting the best to
bacco crop grown in recent years
in both quality and quantity."
The Mullins, S. C., market, lar
gest in South Carolina, opened
with an estimated 1,500,000
pounds on hand. Despite a heavy
morning rain, crowds attended
the sales. Prices ranged from $6
to SBS a hundred and officials es
timated the day's average would
be around $25.
A drizzle at Lumberton appar
ently failed to dampen spirits and
R. C. Rankin, sales supervisor,
said prices for the day would av
erage $24 to $26 a hundred com
pared to opening day average last
year of $11.72.
Speaking from a bandstand in
an open park at Lumberton, Gov
ernor Hoey expressed the hope
that prices would be "reasonable
and fair."
Prices for the first sales at Dil
lon, S. C., brought $6 to $39 a
hundred, with the average esti
mated at $25 to $27 for the day.
