PROSPECTS BRIGHT FOR WINSTON FAIR Anticipate Interesting and Comprehensive Display of Farm Products CATALOG IS NOW READY With prospects bright for bum per .orops in most sections of the Winston-Salem territory the man agement- of the Winston-Salem and Forsyth County Pair antici pates the most interesting and comprehensive display of fann products ever shown in North Carolina. To that end every available inch of space is being allotted to those who wish to for the splendid pre miums being offered in every class. Last year tobacco was added to the list of farm products for which cash premiums were offer ed and this year the display is ex pected to be far better than last. Every type of tobacco grown in this section will be shown and the finest specimens from each of the many large tobacco farms here abouts will compete for the pre mium money. / The new 1937 catalogue, listing the hundreds of products for which cash money is paid for best displays during fair week, can be obtained from the county farm agents or direct from the fair as sociation in Winston - Salem. Hundreds of copies were mailed to exhibitors of previous years and others known to be Interested, but all who wish to compete are urg ed to secure their copy. The management of the fair is rapidly completing the personnel of helpers who will supervise the various exhibits and otherwise aid in promoting North Carolina's finest agricultural fair. Compe tent judges will be engaged to view and classify the various ex hibits, the animals and the pro ducts of the farm. In every way this will be conducted truly as an agricultural exhibit and emphasis will be laid on the exhibit build ings. The entertainment of the public will not be overlooked, of course, but it is the intention of the fair management to make the 1937 event, to be held during the week of October sth to 9th, a tru ly educational affair. Announcement will be made very shortly of the judges in the various contests. HAYES & SPEAS REDUCE STOCK BY 25 PER CENT Planning to re-paint and re decorate their large store, Hayes & Speas Furniture Co., of this city, is announcing in this issue of The Tribune a reduction of 25 per cent for cash on their entire stock of furniture and home fur nishings. This big reduction event is now under way and will continue until 6:00 p. m. Monday, August 16th. According to the management of the store, the 25 per cent re duction is being made in order to sell as much furniture as possible before the task of painting is be gun, inasmuch as every piece of furniture will have to be moved out of the way, and will be liable to damage from paint or hand ling. Hoey, of North Carolina, visited the Lum berton and Whiteville markets and spoke to the assembled throngs, including auctioneers, warehousemen, buyers, growers and spectators. He commented that the outlook for fair prices was promising and said, "from a hasty inspection and judging from the estimate of experienced tobacco men, the farmers of this section are en gaged in harvesting the best to bacco crop grown in recent years in both quality and quantity." The Mullins, S. C., market, lar gest in South Carolina, opened with an estimated 1,500,000 pounds on hand. Despite a heavy morning rain, crowds attended the sales. Prices ranged from $6 to SBS a hundred and officials es timated the day's average would be around $25. A drizzle at Lumberton appar ently failed to dampen spirits and R. C. Rankin, sales supervisor, said prices for the day would av erage $24 to $26 a hundred com pared to opening day average last year of $11.72. Speaking from a bandstand in an open park at Lumberton, Gov ernor Hoey expressed the hope that prices would be "reasonable and fair." Prices for the first sales at Dil lon, S. C., brought $6 to $39 a hundred, with the average esti mated at $25 to $27 for the day.
