J IfSfi NO WAY TO TREAT OFFICIAL GUESTS When officers of the law hereabouts arrest a person, that makes the arrested person an official "guest" of the -town, and we claim that good old Southern Hospitality is outraged whep such a guest is placed in Elkin's jail. Sometime ago a movement was on foot here to build a combina tion jail, city hall and fire house on the city-owned lot located on East Market street. So far as we can learn, the town officials were all broken out in a rash about it, but wound up by failing to scratch, if you get what we mean. According to several we've heard talking about the matter, the town went so far as to have some plans drawn and then found it would cost quite a bit more to construct such a building than they felt able to finance. Thus the matter was dropped. However, in fairness to those who must be arrested and placed in Elkin's jail, it seems like a good idea to our good idea department if plans could be altered so as to cut down the cost of such a structure. The town is now pay ing rent for quarters housing the city tax office and for quarters housing the fire department. We don't know whether the jail prop erty belongs to it or not, but if it does they probably don't want it mentioned. So, if a town build ing could be constructed it would save the town rent and at the same time give Elkin its own mu- THE ELKIN TRIBUNE. ELKIN. NORTH CAROLINA nicipal building, even if it didn't turn out to be a 10-story, marble plated skyscraper. In addition to providing a re spectable jail wherein a respect able prisoner could be kept and at the same time provided with all the comforts of sneezing, cough ing and bed tossing, it would be a deep source of pride to Dixie Gra ham and Luke Darnell, Elkin's policemen. Especially to Mr. Darnell, who in the middle of a cold winter's night has nowhere to warm his toes and thaw out his ears as he makes his rounds while you sleep. All in favor of such a new building please stand up. Thanks. You may both sit down. • * ♦ SIDEWALK FOR ELK SPUR A plan for the building of a ce ment sidewalk along Elk Spur street has been suggested here with government money thought possible provided funds are forth coming with which to buy nec essary materials. It is believed, wider the plan, that the cost to property owners along the street would be about 40 cents per running foot—thus a person who owned a 50 front foot lot would have to pay $lO as his share. If the town were to build the sidewalk outright on the as sessment plan, it would cost the property owners several times that amount, it was said. Not being a property owner who would have to share a part of the expense of such a project, it wouldn't be fair for us to start rattling too much about the idea, but a sidewalk along Elk Spur street is badly needed for the school children who use the street. Thanks to those brain idiots who mistake public streets as a race track for their automo biles, the chances are that soon er or later someone is going to be badly injured or killed if a walk is not provided. From what w§ can gather, the town officials are fully aware of this fact and feel that something must be done sooner or later. Just what their reaction to the pro posed plan for building such a sidewalk is not known. Too, the reaction of property owners along the street is not known, and that's one of the most important items. * • * A LOT HAS HAPPENED We were thinking of it the oth er night—about the many things that have happened to us and our family since coming to Elkin ap proximately six years ago. Since coming here both our children have had measles and chickenpox. One has had scarlet fever. One has been run over by an automobile. Every member of our family has been in the hos pital for an operation. We had a car stolen, such as it was. And to top it all, our home, with every thing in it, burned up. Still, we haven't anything to complain about. It could have been worse. For instance, the per son who stole our old car, Calam ity I, could Jtave brought it back. That would have been bad! There's always something to be thankful for. • • • THIS AND THAT First thing you know it's go ing to be fall. The time of the year when the leaves begin to don gorgeous dress; when thin blue smoke rises straight upward at sunset and something in the air whispers of the winter to come; when the glow of an open fire makes home the grandest place in the'world and life seems more worth the living. Then about that time along comes your coal bill and spoils it all. Tsk, tsk!
