MRS. LP. SOMERS DIES WEDNESDAY Widow of Prominent Wilkes County Physician Had Been Invalid FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY Mrs. Minnie Dell Somers, 64, widow of Dr. L. P. Somers, prom inent Wilkes county physician, died Wednesday at her home near the Wilkes-Iredell county line. She had been an invalid for sev eral years. • Funeral services were held Fri day morning at 11 o'clock from Zion Baptist church. Interment was in the family burying ground, near the home. Mrs. Somers, a native of Ire dell county, was a daughter of the late J. K. and Mrs. RebeCca War ren Couch. She was an outstand ing woman in her community and was greatly beloved. Her husband, widely-known physician, aided many young men and women in obtaining educations and profes sional training as doctors, lawyers and dentists. He died five years ago. She is survived by one daugh ter and one son. Miss Clara Dell Somers and L. P. Somers, Jr., Ht home, and four sisters, Mrs. E. E. Robinson and Mrs. Lula Jones, Union Grove; Mrs. Maggie Fowl er, Haw River, and Mrs! C. Luns ford, Winston-Salem. LOCAL MAN IS GIVEN OFFICE BY WILDCATS At the meeting of the Veterans of the Wildcat Division at Hotel Wilkes in North Wilkesboro Sun day afternoon L. P. Walker of this city, was elected district sen ior vice-commander of the Dis trict. Den of Divisional Associa tion, which organization was per fected at the meeting. Counties comprising the den are: Surry, Wilkes, Ashe, Wautauga, Yadkin, and Alleghany. John W. Hall of North Wilkes boro was named District Com mander. Every veteran who served with the 81st or Wildcat Division is requested to send his name and address to Mr. Hall at North Wil kesboro. The State reunion of the Wild cats will be held in High Point, October 25-27. L. G. BAKER WINS TRIP TO ATLANTA, GEORGIA L. O. Baker, associated with the P-W Chevrolet Co., here, left El kin Wednesday for Atlanta, Ga., where he will be the guest of the Chevrolet Motor Co., at a region al meeting of new car sales man agers. , Mr. Baker, who is president of the Blue Ridge salesman club of western North Carolina, was awarded the trip by Chevrolet Mo tor Co. Doors of the theatre will open Wednesday at 12:30 p. m., for matinee performances. In addition to the stage show, the movie, "Dangerous Holiday," will also be shown. ORPHANS TO GIVE~ CONCERT AT RONDA A group of 14- children from the Oxford Orphanage will pre sent a concert, composed of sing ing and drills, most of the num bers in costume, at the* Ronda gymnasium Monday evening, Au gust 30, at 8 o'clock. COUNTY NOW HAS SCHOOL READERS More Than 5,000 Supplementary Readers Ready for Distribution to the Different Schools More than 5,000 supplementary readers are now in possession of the county and ready to be dis tributed Jo the various schools of the bounty for rental to the ele mentary grades at a modest ren tal fee. according to a statement by John W. Comer, Wednesday. The basal text books are to. be furnished free to the elementary grades. Mr. Comer said, and the rental fee is to be charged only on the supplementary readers for those grades and for the text books for the high school grades. Mr. Comer further stated that the state is getting 50 of the new all steel school buses, and one of I these is to be included in the six new buses to be delivered to this county soon.
