NEWS FROM THE Dobson, Aug. 23. Farmers in the vicinity of Dobson are busy j primifig and curing tobacco. They are more encouraged about their crops since the recent rains, as corn and tobacco have shown such rapid improvement. Rev. C. W. Russell filled his regular appointment at the Methodist church Sunday morn ing, using as his theme the prom ise of "More Abundant Life." A layman meeting will be held in the church next Sunday afternoon at 3::30. Vander Cave, who . lives near Dobson, lost his feed barn by fire during a hard downpour of rain and electrical storm Sunday af ternoon. Lightning struck the barn and set it on fire, which was completely destroyed. Two mules and all of his feedstuff, including new straw and hay and a mowing machine, also a good portion of his farm implements were burned. Two mules were rescued from the burning barn. The family was; away from home and some boys passing saw the blaze and at- i tempted to get the stodk out, but could only get 3 pigs and the two mules out. It was a large new | bam and well equipped and was j a great loss to Mr. Cave. There was a thousand dollars insurance on the building, but nothing on the contents. Several persons liv ing nearby received severe shocks. Mrs. W. E. Hancock and daugh ter, Linda, have gone to prosper ity, S. C. to visit Mrs. Hancock's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pugh. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Jackson, Mrs. Maggie Riggs, Mr. and Mrs. Trent Hardrader and Mr. and * Mrs. Fletcher Harris have gone to Virginia near New River camp ing for a few days. Little Elise Harris is visiting; her aunt, Mrs. Maggie Lewellyn for a few days. Spencer Norman returned from Boone Friday, where he attend- j 1 two sessions of summer school. j Little Mary Liles Freeman of Elkin spent Sunday afternoon with Marianne Mock. Mrs. F. N. Martin and chil dren, Allen and Douglas, of Wins ton-Salem, are spending several days with Mrs. F. F. Riggs, Mrs. Martin's sister. Dr. Brooks Freeman and fam ily of Randleman spent Sunday with Mrs. Maude Freeman, also! Miss Susan Freeman of New York j City, .arrived Sunday to visit Mrs. Freeman, her mother. Mrs. Will Poyher and children, of Moyock, left Wednesday, after , a few days visit in Dobson with ' relatives. Mrs. Sallie Folger visited the family of Rev. Mr. Houck, near Boone last week. Mr. Houck is a former pastor of Dobson Meth- i odist church. Miss Mazie Comer of Raleigh spent the week-end with her sis ter, Miss Emma Comer. | Mrs. C. G. Comer is spending a two weeks vacation in Geor gia with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Redman, Jane Redman, Mrs. Ada Badgett, Mary Emily Badgett and Miss Lo la Gordon of Pilot Mountain and Miss Mary Mitchell of Greens boro spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Riggs. Jack Folger of Mt. Airy spent last week with his grandparents in the Reece home. J. T. Threatte, "the Insurance man," spent Friday in Yadkin | county on business. The Methodist S. S. picnicked on the Scenic Highway above Low Gap Friday. MINE RIDGE Rev. Ford Walker filled his regular appointment at Mine Ridge Baptist church Sunday. The service was followed by a foot washing. A large crowd at tended the service. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Norman attended the Pelts reunion at Elkin Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Snow and son. Jackie, were the guests re cently of Amie Norman, near Greensboro. We are sorry to note that R. C. Wiles Is a patient In the Elkin hospital. Miss Tamsie Booth had as her guests Sunday, Misses Ruby and Gracie Sidden of State Road. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Norman spent Sunday with their daugh ter, Mrs. Carl Luffman, at Pleas ant Ridge. Mr. and Mrs. James Lowe and Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Lowe and family spent Sunday in Burling ton, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Lowe.
