r- • : Thursday, August 26, 1937 Misses Lucy Gray and Nettie Hinshaw spent Monday in Char lotte, attending to business mat ters. Harry Johnson, Jr., of Hickory, was a guest last week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Allen on Church street. Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Reeves spent Monday in Charlotte, attending to business matters. Mr. and Mrs. Leßoy Campbell and little son, returned Sunday from a vacation trip of ten days to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. W.. A. Neaves spent last week in South Bend, Ind., attending to business matters for Chatham Manufacturing Company. Mrs. E. C. Kirkman returned Sunday from a visit of several weeks to her daughter, Mrs. L. L. Hendrix, at Jamestown. Miss Rosamond Neaves spent last week in North Wilkesboro, the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Chas. H. Smithey. Mrs. J. S. Worth returned Tuesday from a visit of two weeks to Dr. and Mrs. P. M. Greene, the latter her daughter, at their home in Mount Airy. C. G. Armfield of Roanoke, Va., was the guest the early part of the week of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Harris, the latter his daughter, at their home on Circle Court. Mrs. W. P. Howard of States ville is spending this week in Jonesville, the guest of her sister, Mrs. A. L. Brown and her broth er, Joe Paris, and other relatives. Mrs. W. M. Evans and son, Ralph, and her brother, Ed R. Carter of Eustis, Florida, and Wil bur Carter, spent Sunday in Blowing Rock and other points in Western North Carolina. Lawrence Harris of Seaboard, is spending sometime here the guest of Mr. and Paul Owyn, the latter his sister, at their home on Owyn Avenue. Mrs. Mable Doughton Davis of 1 High Point, was the guest last week of Dr. and Mrs. R. B. Har rell, the latter her sister, at their home on West Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Browning, Jr., and children, Sterling and Bobby, and Miss Louise Laffoon, spent the week-end at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Ed. R. Carter of Eustis, Florida, has been the guest for several days of his sons, Roger and Wil bur Carter, and other relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Hall of Burlington, arrived Wednesday for a visit of several days'to Mrs. J. L. Hall and family, at their home on West Main street. Dr. and Mrs. Wm. A. Jenkins and son. Bill, returned Sunday from a month's tour of interest ing places on the west coast. They made the trip by automobile. Miss Helen Lewis returned Tuesday to her home in Ken tucky, following an extended visit to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Lewis, the former her brother, at their home on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Long of Ra leigh, Mrs. W. E. Bohannon, Mrs. Carl Young and small daughter, Patty Rue Young, of Elkin were dinner guests in the Joyce home at State Road Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Holcomb and children, Sarah and Hugh, returned yesterday from a vaca tion trip to of a week to Washing ton, D. C., and other places of interest enroute. Mrs. C. A. Crews of Hender son, who is spending sometime here with her mother, Mrs. W. E. Paul, left Friday for a visit of a week to her sister, Mrs. C. G. Armfield, in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. W. A. Johannes and little son, Billy, left Monday for Guil ford College, where they will re main until Sunday the guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. E. Carl Boyles had as their week-end guests at their home on West Main street, Mr. and Mrs. J. Coke Marion and little son, Newton Coke, of Mount Airy. Major and Mrs. F. M. Sizer, of Staunton, Virginia, Were the guests Tuesday of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cox, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Mrs. Sizer is a sister of Mrs. Cox. Mrs. C. A. Hill of Winston-Sa lem, was the guest last week of j her cousins, Mesdames T. V. Cockerham and D. G. Reece at their homes in Elkin and Jones ville. • Rev. and Mrs. W. L. Sherrill of Charlotte, who have been spend ing some time here with Mrs. W. M. Cundiff at her home on Bridge street, have gone to Black Moun tain where they will spend the remainder of the summer. Mrs. Fred Colhard had as her guests over the week-end at her home on Church street, her brother, Evan Marshall, of Lex ington, Kentucky, and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Boger, of Winston- Salem. Mrs. Henry Hock of Salem, yirginia, arrived last week for a visit of several days to Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Laxton and Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Hock. Mrs. Hock is the mother of Mrs. Laxton and Mr. Hock. Mrs. Joe Bivins and son, Joe Gwyn, are expected to return the latter part of the week from a visit of two weeks to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Poindexter, who are spending the summer at Elk Creek, Virginia. Joe and Zeno Dixon, who have been visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Z. H. Dixon, have gone to Farmington to visit their grandfather, F. R. McMahan, be fore returning to their home at Pleasant Garden. Miss Elizabeth Chase of Burns ville, has accepted a place here on the staff of nurses at' Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and she and her mother have taken an apartment at the home of Mrs. W. M. Cundiff on Bridge street. Bohnson Greenwood, who has been working this summer at Shatley Springs, is spending a brief vacation with his mother, Mrs. Joe Paris, in Jonesville, be fore returning to Boone to re sume his studies at Appalachian State Teachers College. Mrs. John Ross and children,: of Jacksonville, Florida, who have been spending the summer here with Mrs. R. L. Poindexter, re turned Monday from Knoxville. Tenn., where they have been for a brief visit. They were accom-' panied by Mrs. Ross' mother, Mrs. J. P. Chandler, also of Jack sonville. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Long re turned Sunday to their home in Raleigh, following a visit of a week to Mrs. Long's mother, Mrs. W. E. Bohannon, on Elk Spur street. They were accom panied home by Mrs. Bohannon arid little granddaughter, Pattie Rue Young, who will be their guests for sometime. Miss Margaret Cragan of Mary ville, Tenn., home economical teacher in the local high school, arrived here Saturday from Greensboro, where she attended the State Convention for Voca tional Home Economics teachers from August 16 through the 21. She has already begun her work preparatory to the opening of the actual classes. Mr. R. L. Bos tain and children, Ruth, Robert and Jean, left Wed nesday for their home in Wil mington, following a visit of three weeks to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Z. H. Dixon. They were ac companied by Miss Blanche Dix on, sister of Mrs. Bostain, and, Miss Ann Dixon of Pleasant Gar- I den, who will be their guests fori a week. Thompson Greenwood arrived' Wednesday for a visit of several days to his mother, Mrs. Joe Par-1 is, at her home in Jonesville. Mr. Greenwood has resigned as teach-! er of English and Journalism at | Needham-Broughton high school, j Raleigh, and has accepted a po-, sition as city editor of the Daily Advance, Elizabeth City. He will assume his duties at Elizabeth City at the close of his vacation. Miss Alice Dixon left Saturday for a two weeks' tour of places of interest in New England. She will return September first to Philadelphia, where she will re main through the Bth, attending the World Friends Conference in session there. This is the first | time the conference has been held in the United States. Miss Dixon is a delegate from the N. C. Yearly Meeting of the Friends church, which was held recently in Guilford College. Miss Doris Clarke of Asheville, has been spending sometime here the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E, C. James, the latter her aunt. Mrs. James and Miss Clarke, accom panied by Mrs. James' sister, Mrs. Walter Clark, of Asheville,! will leave today for Apex,-to visit' their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sex-i ton Lawrence. Mr. James will go 1 down for the week-end and to accompany them home. They will bring their sons, Larry, who has been visiting in Apex, and Jimmy, who has been visiting his grand mother, Mrs. J. A.
