NEWS FROM THE I IS Dobson, Aug. 30. A force of laborers under Foreman T. J. Fol ger are still very busy making ce ment sidewalks in our town. Next, it is hoped somebody will push the heretofore agitated problem of building hard-surface roads on, both Kapp and Elkin streets, both of which lead to the school build ing. This would meet a long felt want and something greatly need ed. * A large crowd attended the an nual sth Sunday community sing ing held in the Dobson school au ditorium Sunday. Several choirs rendered hymns, and it was a full day of music and song. A large number of enthusiastic baseball fans of Dobson regularly attend the ball games of the Bi- State league played in Mt. Airy each week. Mt. Airy won over Leaksville Saturday evening 11 to 3. Miss Susan Freeman of New York is visiting her mother, Mrs. , Maude Freeman. Ruth Ashburn of Winston-Sa lem and Mildred Monday of Mt. Airy spent Sunday with their young friends in Dobson. Misses Julia and Mazie Comer and Mamie Williams of Raleigh spent the week-end in Dobson with home folks and friends. Dr. and Mrs. Joe Folger have moved into the home recently oc cupied by Mr. and Mrs. Wright on Kapp street. Mr. and Mrs. John Alfred Hay nes and Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Gentry were in Dobson Saturday on business. Hermon Coe, who works in the bank here is in the Mt. Airy hos pital and will possibly have an op eration at a later date. Mrs. D. D. Riddle and daugh ter, Susie, of Sanford, are spend ing sometime with Mrs. Sallie Folger. Grandmother Reid is critically ill at her home here. Mrs. Brooks is nursing her. Mrs. Jay Rosendahl is a patient at the Mt. Airy hospital with ap pendicitis and complications. W. L. Reece and Henry Hamp ton attended the funeral services of Mrs. Alice Kaop Saturday at Mt. Park. Mrs. Kapp was the widow of the late John Kapp of Kapps Mill and was 72 years old. Mrs. John W. Crawford, who has been ill in a Statesville hos pital, has sufficiently recovered to return to her home. Mr. and Mrs. George Potterton, of Washington, D. C., visited Mrs. Potterton's uncle, W. L. Reece and family Thursday and Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Reece, Mr. and Mrs. Potterton, Misses Edythe Reece and Marianne Mock motored to Roaring Gap Sunday afternoon. Dr. Charles Willis, of Hunting ton, W. Va., spent a few days this past week with his sister, Mrs. R. A. Freeman, returning to his home Thursday. The Woman's Missionary So ciety of Dobson Baptist church met on Thursday evening with Mrs. John Richards. Opening song, "Send the Light." Scripture, Miss Norman, prayer, Mrs. Book er. Program leader. Miss Edythe Reece, subject, "The Indians." Those contributing to the pro gram with discussions relative to the characteristics of the Indian race, their customs and their re ligion, were: Mrs. Jennie Stanley, Mrs. Howard Snow, Mrs. W. L. Reece, Miss Mary Bettie Norman and Miss Elizabeth Booker. Little Marianne Mock and little Mary Nance Blevins gave some appre ciated poems including Hiawathia and sang some Indian lullabyes. They were dressed in Indian cos tumes and their contribution to the program was an interesting feature. Miss Reece and Miss Nor man gave the opening and con cluding remarks on the Indians. At the business period the name of Mrs. Howard Snow was added to the roll of members. Mrs. Snow (nee Miss Myrtle Needham), comes to the society from the Pi lot Mt. Baptist church. During the social hour Mrs. Richards, assisted by her sister, Miss Ola Angel served a tempt ing plate of sandwiches, cookies and an iced grape fruit and orange drink. Next meeting will be held with Mrs. DeWitt Sparger. The annual Shore reunion was held at Maple Springs church near Winston-Salem, Sunday. The meeting was presided over by Mrs, Clyde Shore, president for 1937. Officers for 1938 were elected as follows: Ernie Shore, sheriff of Forsyth county; president; Vice- President, Marvin Shore; Secre tary and Treasurer, W. E. Shore. During the song service Miss Mar garet Sailor of Winston-Salem sang two beautiful and impres- —! : sive "Trust In Him" and "He is My Light and My Salva tion." Rev. J. P. Davis of Boon ville Baptist church brought a gospel message at 11 o'clock, using as his theme, "What Have They Seen in Thine House?" Isaiah 39- 4. At the noon hour a bountiful dinner was spread under the broad oaks, during which and af terwards, everyone enjoyed the sweet association of kindred and friends. Those attending from Dobson were W.
