Mrs. James Groce is-spending this week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Doss, at King. Mr. and Mrs. J. Walter Darnell spent Sunday in Winston-Salem, the guests of Mrs. Chas. Lyons. Miss Elizabeth Shores and Fred Shores have returned from a va cation trip to Myrtle Beach, S. C. Mrs. Edwin Duncan of Sparta, is visiting her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Wm. R. Wellborn, on Bridge street. Chas. Dunnegan will leave to day for Raleigh, to resume his studies at North Carolina State College. Robert Kirkman returned Tues day from a visit of several days to his brother, Ben Kirkman, in Akron, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Holloway of Morehead City are the guests this ■week of Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Reece and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown. Rev. and Mrs. , Chas. Howard and family of Buies Creek are the guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Walker, at their home on Church street. ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA Miss Betty Allen returned Sat urday from Durham, where she spent six weeks attending sum mer school at Duke University. Wade Shugart of Sumter, S. C-, spent Friday in Jonesville, the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Shugart. Miss Elizabeth Turner of Duke Hospital, Durham, has returned following a visit to her sister, Mrs. Smith Williamson, at her home on Elk Spur street. Mrs. J. Coke Marion and little son, Newton Coke, of Mount Airy, are the guests this week of Mrs. E. Carl Boyles, and other friends here. Mrs. Sam Ray and Sammy Gil liam, of Statesville, were the guests last week of her sister, Mrs. Roy West, and Mr. West, at their home on West Main street. Joe Biyins is spending this week at Elk Creek, Virginia, with Mrs. Bivins, who is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Poin dexter. Mrs. Wilson L. Stratton of Charlotte arrived Tuesday for a visit of a week to her mother, Mrs. R. L. Kirkman, at her home on West Main street. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brown and son and daughter, Bonnie and Dixie, spent the week-end in Knoxville, Tenn., the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brown. Mrs. Earl Berry of State Road, recently entered Duke Hospital, Durham, for treatment. Friends of Mrs. Berry will regret to know that she is unimproved. Mrs. J. B. Parks returned Sun day from Lexington, Va., where she spent two weeks the guest of Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Tharpe, the latter her daughter. Friends of Mrs. W. I. Shugart will regret to know that she is a patient at Hugh Chatham Me morial Hospital, where she is un dergoing treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shouse and. Miss Louise Boles of Winston-Sa lem, were the week-end guests of Miss Nettie Hinshaw, at her home west of Elkin. Miss Beattie Lee Hambright of Clover, S. C., was the guest last week of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Ham bright, the former her brother, at their home on Gwyn avenue. Miss Bessie Headen Sttowd of Chapel Hill arrived Tuesday for a visit of several days to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. G. Ashby, at their home on Bridge street. Mrs. J. H. Caldwell and son, Billy, of Wyncotte, Pa., arrived Wednesday for a vi6it of several days to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Neaves at their home on Bridge street. Mrs. W. F. Stroud of Chapel Hill spent the week-end here the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. G. Ashby, at their home on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gwyn, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Chatham and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Graham spent the week-end at Bromine-Arsenic Springs at Crumpler. James Gilliam of Lenoir is spending sometime here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gil liam, at their home on Surry Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. J. Mark McAdams returned Saturday from Chapel Till, where Mr. McAdams attended summer school at the University of North Carolina. P. A. Brendle, who has been ill for several weeks at his home on Elk Spur street, has not been rest ing so comfortably for the past several days, his frfends will re gret to know. Mr. and Mrs. Leßoy Martin and sons of Raleigh, were the guests last week of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Arnold, at State Road, and Mr. and Mrs. David Brendle of this city. Mrs. B. L. Jeffords of German town, formerly Miss Bertha Arn old of this city, is recovering nice ly from an operation at a Wins ton-Salem Hospital Monday, her friends will be glad to know. Miss Beatrice Cobb of Morgan ton, editor and owner of the News Herald, Morganton, and Mrs. W. E. 'Nichols were here Thursday to attend the Guernsey show at Klondike Farm. Mrs. T. A. Leeper returned to her home here Sunday from a Charlotte hospital, where she re cently underwent a major opera tion, her many friends will be glad to know. Misses Constance and Mildred Hock, Mary Ellen Harrell, Glenda Norman and Grace Laffoon left Sunday for Hickory, where they will spend a week the guests of Miss Phyllis Johnson. Mrs. C. O. Hadley and daugh ter and son, Ruth and Charles, of Statesville, spent the week-end here with her parents, Mr. and ( Mrs. W. J. Snow, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Friends of Miss Louise Transou will be glad to know that she is improving nicely at the Baptist hospital, Winston-Salem, where she is a patient- and that she will be able to return to her home here within a few days. Her mo ther, Mrs. H. D. Transou, visited her Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hinshaw had as their week-end guests, Mrs. Hinshaw's brother, Noland Bing ham, of Seattle, Washington. Miss Es telle Cocker ham, who has been spending the past sev eral years In Chicago, arrived last week for a visit of several months to her mother, Mrs. Ida Cocker ham, on West Main street. Mrs. N. S. Forester, Jr., and daughter, Joan, of North Wilkes boro, spent the early part of the week here the guests of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Church, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Cox and Virgil Cox of Mouth of Wilson, Va., spent the week-end here the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Neaves and Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cox. Mrs. Roscoe Poplin attended the wedding of Miss Mary Hickman of Hudson, and William T. Vaughn of Durham, last week at Hudson. Mrs. Poplin was one of the soloists for the ceremony. Dr. Fred Hubbard and daugh ter, Miss Gwendolyn Hubbard, of North Wilkesboro, were the guests a short time Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Dockery, at their home on Bridge street. Friends of Mason Lillard will be glad to know that he is recover ing nicely from a major operation at Charlotte Sanatorium, Char lotte. Mr. Lillard underwent the operation on Thursday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Brown had as their week-end guests at their home on Church street, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reece of Salisbury and Miss Ethel Gillimore of Lexington. Mrs. Rfeece is a sister of Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Benford Hurd and daugh ter, Janice Gray, and Mrs. George Chatham, Jr., and daughter, Peg gy Jean, are expected to return today from Galax, Virginia, where they have been the guests of rel atives for several days. Ray W. Carter of New York, formerly of State Road, will be in charge of the branch office of the Dampney Co., which has recently been opened in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Carter is the son of Mrs. T. W. Billings of State Road. Waymouth Vestal, Edwin Brown, Prank Eskridge, Buddy Swaim, Click wilkins and Ralph Swaim, all of Jonesville, returned Wednesday from Fort Bragg, where they have been at C. M. T. C. for several weeks. Mrs. S. S. Blackburn of Sum merfield is spending a two weeks vacation here at Hotel Elkin. Mrs. Blackburn will also visit Mrs. J. S. Worth while here. She was ac companied to Elkin by Mr. Black burn, who returned to Summer field Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Young and John Young spent Sunday in Ral eigh, with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Long. They were accompanied home by Mrs. W. E. Bohannon and Patty Rue Young, who were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Long last week. Misses Margaret and Chloe Holcomb, Dorothy Chappell and Elizabeth Church, the latter of Roaring River, Mr. and Mrs. Sig Holcomb, Bill Pardue, Jack Hol comb, Johnson Swarengen and Clyde Cothren spent the week end at Shady Shack at Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Dr. Ethel Abernethy returned Wednesday from the University of Chicago, Chicago, where she has been for several weeks, for a visit with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. L. B. Abernethy, prior to re suming her place on the faculty of Queens-Chicora College, Char lotte. Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Hayes of Beckley, W. Va., arrived Monday for a visit to Rev. Hayes' sister, Mrs. C. A. McNeill and Mr. Mc- Neill, at their home on Bridge street. Rev. Hayes has gone to Lexington to hold a revival and Mrs. Hayes will remain for a visit of several days.
