Thursday, September 16, 1937 (ftIOCAI I Herbert Graham, Jr., left today for Georgia Tech, Atlanta, to re sume his studies. Miss Dorothy Chappell left Wednesday to resume her studies at Guilford College. Mrs. B. F. Tulbert is spending this week in Winston-Salem with R. G. Gentry and family. Moir Hall left Tuesday for Davidson College, where he will be a member of the senior class this year. Mrs. Fred Neaves left Tuesday for Benson, where she will spend a week the guest of Miss Annie Lee Denning. Miss Lena Wright of McColl, S. C„ is the guest this week of Mrs. Marion Allen at her home on Church Street. L. C. Couch, Jr., left last week for College Park, Georgia, where he will attend school at Georgia Military Academy. Rufus Crater left Thursday for Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, where he will be a member of the Senior class this year. Mrs. C. L. Haywood and child ren, Peggy and Charles, in, have returned from an extended va cation at Morehead City. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Markham and children have returned from a visit to relatives at Red Oaks, f near Chase City, Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Poplin have recently moved to the home va cated by Mr. and Mrs. Dixie Gra ham West Main street. Miss Angess Gray will return today from Reidsville, where she has been the guest for several days» of Miss Margurite Bartee. Miss Margaret Sale of the Con cord school faculty, spent the week-end here with her mother, Mrs. W. S. Sale, on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brandon moved this week to Chapel Hill. Their many friends regret to see them go elsewhere to reside. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hall an nounce the birth of a son, Clyde Alleft Hall, Jr., at Hugh Chatham Memorial hospital, September 14, 1937. Miss Margaret Abernethy left Tuesday for Greensboro, to re sume her studies at the Woman's College of the University of Ndrth Carolina. Miss Mary Hendren returned Thursday from Prescott, Arizona, where she spent the summer with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hendren, the former her brother. Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Trivette of Winston-Salem were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Trivette's mother, Mrs. R. G. Franklin, at her home fen West Main street. I Misses Lesbia Graham and Oleen Norman left Monday to en ter school at the Woman's Col lege of the University of North Carolina, Grensboro. Wm. R. Wellborn, Jr., will leave leave Monday of next week for Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., where he will continue the study of medicine. Miss Nannie Catherine Jones of Covington, Va., is spending this week here the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barker, at their home on Wept Main street. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Roscoe of Chapel Hill, were the guests last week of Mrs. Roscoe's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Masten, at their home on Elk Spur street. Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Hadley and children of Statesville, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Hadley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Snow, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Miss Nancy Click left Monday and Miss Sarah Click will leave today to resume their studies at the Woman's College of the Uni versity of North Carolina, Greens boro. Mrs. Ila D. Burch and child ren, Jimmy and Jessie V., of Rusk, spent the week-end In White Plains with Mrs. Burch's sister, Mrs. George Nichols and family. H. L. Hoppers of Washington, D. C. spent the week-end at State Road with Mrs. Hopper and little son, Eldridge Lee, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Eldridge. Mrs. J. D. Berry and Miss Ann Clapp of Raleighr were the week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Maguire, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Mrs. Berry is a sister of Mrs. Maguire. Edwin Royall and Hoke Cocker ham left Tuesday for Chapel Hill, where they will be students at the University of North Carolina this year. They were accompanied by the former's father, George Roy all, who returned to Elkin Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Martin and daughter. Miss Marcelle, of Char lotte, were the week-end guests of Mrs. Martin's mother, Mrs. D. J. Cockerham, at her home on West Main street. Mrs. Beatrice Myers Phillips is | expected to return today from Marion, Va., where she has been the guest since Tuesday of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Church, the latter her daughter. Miss Iris Collins has returned to her home here from an ex tended visit to her sister, Mrs. Bill Shore, in Maryland, and other relatives in Washington, D. C., and Delaware. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Caldwell of Concord, and Mrs. R. M. Mc- Kemie of Charlotte, were the guests Tuesday of Mr. and Mrs. J. Walter Darnell, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Mrs. E. F. McNeer of this city, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. B. F. Miller, of Sedgefield, left Tuesday for a visit of a week to Mr. arid Mrs. John Reich in Washington, D. C. Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Tulbert and children, Hazel, Nellie and Billy Joe of Elkin and Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Tulbert of Benham, spent Sun day in Winston-Salem, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. John Franklin announce the birth of a daugh ter, Anna Victoria Franklfn, September 10, 1937. Mrs. frank lin was formerly Miss Anna Laura Masten of this city. * Mason Lillard returned to his home here Friday from a Char lotte hospital where h£ recently underwent a major operation. He is much improved, his many friends will be glad to know. Dr. Ethel Abernethy left Sun day to resume her place on the faculty of Queens-Chicora Col lege, charlotte, following a visit to her parents, Rev. and Mrs. L. B. Abernethy, on Hospital Road. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Duncan of Sparta announce the birth of a daughter, Jane Cannon, at Davis Hospital, Statesville, September 12, 1937. Mrs. Duncan was former ly Miss Bessie Lee Wellborn of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wright of Dobson have bought the Clyde Woodruff property in North El kin and have already moved into their home. Mr. Wright will be a member of the faculty at West Yadkin school. Miss Kay Spaeth of Landsdale, Pa., is the guest this week of Miss Sarah -Kelley Lillard at her home on Gwyn Avenue. Misses Lillard and Spaeth will leave "Friday to resume their studies at Queens- Chicora College, Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Roberts and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Roberts and son of Mount Airy, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. D. J. Cockerham, at her home on West Main street. T. D. Roberts is a brother of Mrs. Cockerham. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Newman and daughter and son, Miss Bea trice and Billy, and Mr. and Mrs. Luke Vestal and son, Raymond, spent Sunday at" Harrisonburg, Va., and visited Endless Cav erns and Massanetten Caverns. Dr., and Mrs. C. E. Nicks had as their guests last week at their home on Main street, Dr. Nicks' 1 sister, Mrs. Stark Adams, and daughter, Pauline Adams, of State Center, lowa, and his niece, Miss Suzanna Matthews, of Thomasville. .Mrs. Hoyt T. Hambright and son, Jimmy, have gone to Bur lington to join Mr. Hambright and Mrs. Hambright will teach English in the Burlington. city schools this year. ■ The Ham brights have made a host of friends during their residence here. Vance Brown, who has been making his home here for several years, has accepted a position with McKnight & Co., Shelby, and has already assumed bis du ties. Mrs. Brown will join him In about two months. Their many friends regret to see them leave Elkin. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jackson re turned to their home in Balti more, Md., Monday, following a visit to Mr. Jackson's sister, Mrs. R. L. Burch, and Mr. Burch. Mr. and Mrs. Burch also had as their week-end guest, their daughter in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Burch, of Danville, Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. John Badgett have moved from Elkin to Winston- Salem. Mr. Badgett, who has been connected with the Southern Rail way Company for 37 years, and for several years has served as section foreman here, has retired, and they will make their home in Winston-Sa'em ir> the future. LOCAL YOUNG MAN RECEIVES HONOR Robert O. Poplin, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Poplin of this city, was honored for outstanding military achievements in his final term at Fort Bragg C. M. T. camp this summer. Mr. Poplin was cadet-colonel, the highest position obtainable in camp, for the North and South Carolina days, and the entire camp passed in review before him. He al3o received the reserve com mission. As regimental commander, he led the grand march at the final dance, the last social event of the season. Mr. Poplin has been a member of the faculty of the Stem high school since his graduation from Wake Forest college in 1934. . DR. Dr. Crutchfield ts -a graduate of the Palmer Institute, class df 1929, where he obtained his Doc tor of Chiropractic degree, and of the Davenport College of Chiro practic, where he obtained his Philosopher of Chiropractic de gree.
