tOLiC 10 A BjgpU BAOM^ WHAT IS TO BE DONE? At this writing, which, for your information, is Sept ember 17, no one seems to know whether school authorities are planning to anything about the elementary school build ing, a part of which has been condemned by the State In surance Commission as a menace to the lives of school chil dren. According to Deputy Fi well, who recently made a con building, as well as several otheH buildings in the downtown area, the school auditorium, four up stairs school rooms, the toilets and furnace rooms are all unsafe. These parts of the building were condemned and necessary changes were presicribed. If these changes are not made within a reasonable length of time, the building can be locked up. To some it may seem foolish that the state, in condemning the building is acting a little foolish. The building has been there many WiJA Make LUNCH TIME Here comes refreshment pure, wholesome re freshment—for ail the family and its friends ... in a six-bottle carton. There are lots of reasons to get hot and bothered, it seems to us. In the first place, fires always have to have a first time to hap pen and the fact that one has never happened as yet is no rea son that one will not happen to day, tomorrow or next week. If it doesn't, all well and good, but if it does . . . ? Well, some might argue, at the last fire drill that was staged at the elementary school, all the pu pils marched out in orderly fash ion in a few minutes. If fire breaks out, they can do it again. But . . . Suppose an actual fire broke out. The children might start marching out In orderly fashion, THE ELKIN TRIBUNE, ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA but it's dollars to doughnuts that the moment they spied smoke or flame the orderly exit would turn into a stampede with resultant in jury and loss of life. Or . . . Suppose a fire broke out and the flalmes started licking up one of the stairways tb the upper iloor? What then? And don't think the school building, al though of brick construction, wouldn't burn like a paper box. The floors, soaked through and through with oil that has been ptit on them for years, would burn like powder once fire got a start. • The changes to the building, as outlined by the Insurance Com mission should be made. It's all right to dilly dally and put off some things, but when the lives ef children are involved, it's no time to stall. • » * A SUGGGESTION A suggestion has been made by a reader that the town have its street force cut down the tall weeds and grass that has grown up during the summer along paths, sidewalks and at street crossings leading to the school. These weeds make it especially bad for children, it was said, on wet rainy mornings inasmuch as they have to walk through them or brush against them. One particular walk in ques tion is the one that leads from Church street to North Bridge, running between the homes of L. P. Walker and Rev. Eph Whisen hunt. ! ! ! THIS AND THAT Well, if a storm doesn't come up and blow down the school gym nasium, prospects ought to be pretty bright for a successful fair this week-end. . Our wife, who is the fair sec retary, hasn't yet consented to speak to Mr. R. C. Lee about giv ing us a job helping operate the riding devices. Seems like she wants to put us doing something that there's no fun in. First thing she knows we'll re fuse to even go to the fair and then where will it be? Abe Harris has been considering putting in a booth in the exhibi tion building advertising radios, and keeping Smith Williams there to look after it. However, we un-' derstand the fair directors have objected to Smith because a lot of children are expected to attend, and children scare so easily. Lovely weather, isn't it, we're having? P. S. If you can't keep a secret, don't read this. It is not suppos ed to be known, but E. W. Mc- Oaniel is planning to get married in January. He's planning to mar ry a girl in Jefferson (provided she doesn't realize her mistake in time), and Hotel Elkin will be their home. How do we know? He told us himself.
