It was the first time in i been in to look around, and w a change—new faces, etc. So to find everything going on n there five years before, and we' really do believe that several of them were glad to see us again. We remember when we left five years kgo that the young lady whose desk is in the outer office was taking a stick of chewing gum from a freshly purchased pack. Well when we walked in last Friday, she was putting the first stick in her mouth. She looked up, saw us, and said: "I thought you had gone." And about that time Sam Riley clerk of recorder's court came walking in, gave us a disapprov ing glance and said: "You not gone yet?" Imagine their surprise and dismay when I informed them that I had not just gone, but had just come to pay a visit. Maybe time passes faster up here among the hoot owls and the corn squeezings as some some of those flatlanders seem to picture this neck of the woods. Maybe time doesn't pass down there at all, for for the life of us we could n't tell much difference even af ter five years. Mr. Riley appeared a bit plumper and a becoming streak of grey hair at the temples was maybe a bit greyer but other- £ A A SALVE ®® ® COLDS Liquid-Tablets Salve - Nose J"" l ®® Drops 10c & 25c Don't tet your children suffer moment longer than ttrictljf necessary. And the others there in the office, who were awful nice to me when we, a poor country boy, first started re porting, . hadn't aged a single wrinkle. You'll please pardon an old man for bringing back memories of his childhood, but we spent a lot of happy hours fooling around the courthouse and recorder's court. When we were there on the job about seven years ago there used to be a little negro woman called "Little Bit" who was forever get ting into the toils of the law due to her love for anything that con tained alcohol. We happened to think of her while there Friday and asked about her. "Oh, she's doing time in the workhouse," we were told, which all goes to prove that things are about normal. The only difference we could see was they've gone and got themselves a new judge. When we were there Judge Patton was on the bench, and he used to make a speech on almost any occasion. Why many's the time we've heard him deliver a lecture to some un fortunate colored boy who was up for something or other, that would have made a college professor go hang his head in shame. Fact is, they used to make us hang our head and doze. However, Judge Patton was present Friday as a practicing lawyer, though good ness knows as long as he has been at it he ought to get along with out having to practise so much now and he was expressing sur prise that we weren't on the New York Times. We acted surprised about it too, and ended up by go ing over in the corner where there was an umbrella and having a good cry. Judge Patton and us used to get along together pretty good, al though at times he would hand out a verdict that we didn't ap prove of, and we would manage to work up a bit of sass in our story for the paper. Then for a day or so we would sorta fight shy of him during court instead of sitting in our usual seat at the prosecutor's table. You can't always tell just ex actly what a judge is going to do, as is proven by the fact that Judge Patton yanked our city ed itor up in court one day on a con tempt charge. Personally, cover ing the event, we didn't take sides but did have a lot of fun sug gesting to our boss a number of conveniences for his cell. We don't remember just exactly how it all did end up, but our own private opinion at the time was that both sides were engaged in building a tremendous mountain out of a rather small mole hill. But then, boys will be boys. Or so we heard someone say WEST YADKIN HONOR ROLL FOR 6TH MONTH Out of an enrollment of 770 students the following made the honor roll for the sixth month of the West Yadkin school term: Ist grade; Ervin Denny, Harold Wagoner, Carol Brandon, Allen Swaim, Gerry Boles, Leo Myers, Sue Johnson, Stella Ireland, Paul ine Hawkins. 2nd grade: Herbert Bryant, Lu cile Macy, June Turner. 3rd grade: Qarvy Mathis, Har old Caudle.
