Opening song, "To the Work." The president conducted the devotionals. Program lead er, Mrs. W. L. Reece. Topic for month, "The State's Sheaves with Rejoicing." The leader gave a brief perlude on "The States," especially the Southern Baptist Convention States and their Mission Work of Today. v "Our States Fifty Years Ago" was discussed by Mrs. R. A. Free man. Leader gave a "quiz drill" on the various organizations of Mission work, when and where organized. "Our States and Co operative Program, by Mrs. D. T. Sparger; "State Missions," by Miss Holbrook; "Home Missions" by Mrs. C. W. Fowler, and "For eign Missions," by Miss Norman; "Co-operating in Christian Edu cation," by Mrs. Emma Hamp ton; "Co-operating in Healing," by Mrs. Howard Snow; Dialogue, "Sheaves of State Missions," by Miss Norman and Miss Reece; Song, "God Save Our State." Af ter the business meeting the host ess served an ice course. Next meeting will be held with Mrs. W. E. Reid. Miss Elizabeth Freeman and Miss Mazie Comer of Raleigh, spent the week-end in Dobson with home folks, returning Sun day evening to their respective jobs in the Revenue department In Raleigh. Mrs. Culmer Jackson is recov ering satisafctorily from an op eration in the Elkin hospital, and expects to return home at an early date. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith are moving to Yanceyville, where Mr. Smith has been transferred; from the camp near Dobson toj Yanceyville. A large number of Dobsonians attended the American Legion Fair at Mount Airy last week. | Mr. and Mrs. Woodhouse will leave this week to take up resi dence at Gastonia, having been, transferred to a camp near there, from the CCC camp near Dobson. Quite a number of boys will be brought to the camp here from Statesville this week. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McNeil of Carthage, and Guy Norman of Winston-Salem, spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Norman. Two weeks term of civil court begins this morning. Judge J. H. Clement is presiding. Brooks Cross Roads The Happy Hour Sewing club met at the home of Mrs. Clyde Wright last Wednesday with eight members present. Sewing and conversation were enjoyed during the afternoon. Due to the fact that the hostess has re cently moved into the new resi dence in which she and her fam ily now live, the sewing club members presented her with a shower of gifts suitable for the new home. This came as a com plete surprise to her. Delicious refreshments were served to the following: Mrs. Spencer Bell, H. J. Weaver, Fred Money, Miles Shore, G. C. Wallace, W. N. Ire land, Jr., and Raymond-VanHoy. On Friday night of last week Prof, and Mrs. W. N. Ireland, Jr., entertained members of the West Yadkin school faculty and their husbands and wives at a very enjoyable Brunswick stew. They also had as their guests the school board members and their wives, and the county superin tendent, Mr. J. T. Reece, and wife. The delicious stew was served from a huge iron pot in which it had been prepared on the lawn of the Ireland home. Williams, Miss Tabitha Burgess and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tron, of Valdese, attended the wedding Saturday of Miss Annie Lou Bur gess and Mr. Bob Elkins at Lib erty, N. C. Dr. and Mrs. Spencer Bell, ac companied by Prof, and Mrs. Athel Phillips, of Mt. Airy, and Prof, and Mrs. Albert Martin, of Boonville, attended the Wake Forest-Carolina football game Saturday afternoon. Mrs. W. F. Howard, of States ville, visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Johnson a few days last week. Edwin Shore, assistant farm agent of Transylvania county, with headquarters at Brevard, spent the week-end with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Shore. Mrs. J. A. Young and Miss Madeline Porter, of Shelby, were house guests of Mrs. H. J. Weav er for several days last week. Mrs. H. A. Wood and son, Har vey, made a business visit to Elkin on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wright, Mrs. H. J. Weaver, Mr. A. G. Floyd, of Raleigh, and Henry Woodruff, of Elkin, attended the State-Davidson football game last Saturday night at Charlotte. PLEASANT HILL We are very glad to report that our pastor, Rev. I. W. Vestal, is recovering from a recent illness. He was able to attend church Sunday. Rev. D. W. Day preached at Oak Grove Baptist church Sun day afternoon and at Urban Street Baptist church, Winston- Salem, Sunday night. The Ladies' Chorus of Pleasant Hill church sang at Oak Orove Baptist church of Winston-Sa lem at 2:30 o'clock Sunday even ing and at the Urban Street Bap tist church Sunday night. Miss Irene Day has returned home from a two weeks' visit in New York City. She also visited Coney Island and Brooklyn. Mrs. Jim Lawrence, of North Elkin, is visiting Nfr. and Mrs. Claude Ray this week. Mr. and Mrs. Brannon Day, Misses Beulah and Mae Couch, Anna Laura Ray visited in North Wilkesboro Sunday. The P. H. C. class of the Pleasant Hill Baptist church held its monthly meeting Thursday night, September 22, at the home of Mrs. Lester Wilkins. The meeting opened with the presi dent, Miss Mozell Darnell, calling the meeting to order. The pro gram was based on poetry, read by Miss Beulah Couch, Miss Ag nes Transou and Miss Anna Laura Ray.
