Friday Evening Book Club Meets

The Friday Evening Book club
was entertained last week by Mrs.
J. Walter Darnell at her home on
Gwyn avenue. Rummy was play
ed, with Miss Mattie Mae Powell
winning high score prize. Mrs.
T. A. Leeper was runner-up. A
sweet course carrying out a red
and green color scheme was
served.

Mrs. Edwin Duncan Hostess At
Luncheon
Mrs. Edwin Duncan was hostess
at a delightful luncheon at her
home in Sparta Friday to honor
Mrs. Edward C. Voss, a bride of
the early fall.
Christmas decorations were
used throughout the home.
Luncheon was served at one
o'clock and bridge was played
during the afternoon at three ta
bles. In the progressions Mrs.
Hugh Hill Chatiham received high
score award and Mrs. Franklin
FOlger second high.
Mrs. Voss was presented china
in her pattern. Mrs. Sam
Neaves, a bride of the summer,
and Miss Elizabeth Shores, bride
elect, were given a remembrance.
Baptist Circle Meetings Are Held
Monday
Two circles of the Woman's
Missionary Society of the First
Baptist church met Monday. The
Emma Leachman circle met with
Mrs. W. P. Reece, in the after
noon, at her home on Bridge
street, with 12 members and one
visitor present. Mrs. T. G. Har
ris conducted the devotional ser
vice. Mrs. L. C. Couch had charge
of the program. The closing
prayer was offered by Mrs. p. A.
Brendle.
Mrs. Charlie Young was host
ess to the Pearl Johnson circle at
the Lucy Hanes club house, in the
evening, with 14 members and
two visitors present. Mrs. George
Adams had charge of the pro
gram. She was assisted by Mes
dames Beatrice Myers Phillips,
Sam Ray, and Mary Laster.
Each hostess served refresh
ments during a social hour fol
lowing the programs.
Woman's Club Meeting at Hotel
Elkln Tuesday Afternoon
A joint meeting of the depart
ments of the Elkin Woman's Club
was held at Hotel Elkin Tuesday
afternoon at 3:30. Mrs. Paul
Gwyn, club president, presided
over the meeting. The Club Wo
man's Hymn was used as the op
ening song. After the routine
of business a program planned
by Mrs. L. G. Meed, chairman of
the Department of Education, was
presented.
Two numbers were given by
pupils of the Dorminy dancing
class, a dance solo by Ketchel Ad
ams and a group dance by Misses
Mabel Cathey Lee per, Julia Bry
an, Beulah Yates, Betty Jean
Dtrnell and Mollle Lou Cox.
• Prof, Z, H. Dixon was guest
speaker for the meeting and gave
an interesting and helpful talk
on "Our Troubled World." The
meeting was closed with the rep
etition of the collect of the Wo
man's Club.

Afternoon
The circles of the Woman's
Missionary Society of the Meth
odist church met Monday after
noon at 3:30 in the following
homes:
Circle number one met with
Mrs. Paul Gwyn on Gwyn avenue
with 13 members present. Mrs.
Mason Lillard, circle chairman,
presided over the meeting and
conducted the devotional service
which was a Christmas message.
Mrs. J. Mark McAdams had
charge of the Bible study.
Circle number two met with
Mrs. R. L. Harris on West Main
street, with 12 members present.
Mrs. H. C. Salmons, chairman,
had charge of the devotional ser
vice. The Bible study was con
ducted by Mrs. R. G. Smith.
Circle number three met at the
home of Mrs. Earl Hodel on West
Main street with Mrs. Clyde Eller
.associate hostess. Seventeen mem
bers and one visitor were present.
Mrs. Errol Hayes, circle chair
man, had charge of a Christmas
program. She was assisted by
Mesdames G. T. Roth, James
Booher, R. C. Freeman and A. O.
Bryan. Mrs. R. M. Chatham sang
two Christmas songs.
Each of the hostesses served
refreshments during a social hour
at the close of the program.
District Meeting of American
Legion Auxiliary Here Monday
' Afternoon
The Elkin unit of the American
Legion Auxiliary of the George
Gray Post was hostess to the
meeting of the thirteenth district
of North Carolina Monday after
noon at Hotel Elkin.
The meeting was called to or
der by Mrs. George Royall, vice
chairman, who presented the high
school glee club, a project spon
sored by the local unit. Under
the direction of Mrs. J. H. Bee
son, the following numbers were
presented: "Partners" and "About
Katie" by Ira Wilson, "Irish Mel
ody," and "Silent Night" by
Franz Gruber.
The "Star-Spangled Banner"
was sunt followed by prayer led
by Mrs. Leslie Aldridge, chaplain
of the local unit. After repeating
the preamble of the Auxiliary, the
meeting was turned over to Mrs.
Leßoy Salmons, district commit
tee woman, who had charge of the
remainder of the program.
Mrs. Joe Bivins gave the offi
cial welcome. The response was
given by Miss Nannie Dodson, of
Winston-Salem. Recognition of
officers and war mothers follow
ed. Mrs. Fannie Salmons was the
only war mother present.
Short addresses were made by
Mrs. Herbert Taylor, of Dunn,
state president of the auxiliary,
Mrs. George Bostian, of China
Grove, department vice-president,
and Miss Aurelia Adams, of
Dunn, department secretary.
The meeting was closed by
singing "America." After the
business session, coffee and
sandwiches were served.
Mrs. Salmons, Mrs. Smithers
and Miss Dodson represented the
Winston-Salem unit.
SWAN CREEK
Rev. N. T. Jarvis filled his reg
ular monthly appointment here
Saturday after an absence of a
month due to his recent illness.
His many friends are glad to see
him much improved in health. D.
C. Swaim talked Sunday at the
eleven o'clock service. Everyone
present enjoyed his talk very
much.
Mrs. Harvey Couch returned to
her home last week from the
Hugh Chatham hospital where
she recently underwent an op
eration. Her friends wish for her
a speedy recovery.
Mrs. W. C. Bell is very much
improved from a recent illness
due to an infected hand. She
spent some time in the Davis
hospital at Statesville, but has
returned to her home at this
writing.
Mr. Fletcher Mathis, of Ohio,
has been visiting friends and rel
atives in our community for some
time.
Mrs. Mary Coward and son,
Buster, Mr. Clarence Fairchoth
and other friends from Winston-
Salem, visited Mr. and Mrs. D.
C. Swaim Sunday.
Several people of our commun
ity have been attending the re
vival meetings that have recently
closed. Everyone reports a fine
meeting, with many- members
added to the various churches.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Harris and
family spent the week-end with
Mrs. Harris' parents, Mr. and
Mrs. J. R. Mays, of the Dennyvllle
community, and attended the
baptizing on Sunday at the
church.
Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Rumple
and children, of Ronda, together
with other relatives, were the
Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.
M. Myers.
Miss Evelyn Swaim and Miss
Atheline Pinnlx spent the week
end with frifends in the Oak
Grove community.
It is reported that Mr. and Mrs.
Qaither Key are moving from our
community to be near his work at
Elkin. He is employed by A. L
Brown.
Mr. James Stroud, of Bethel
community, was the dinner guest
of his sister, Mrs. R. R. Swaim,
on Sunday.

gram given by the Sunday school
consisting of songs, recitations,
and a Christmas play, together
with a Christmas tree for both
young and old. With the coop
eration of all, we hope to
this a happy occasion.
