I IN THE SOCIAL REALM News of Parties, Clubs, Weddings TELEPHONE No. 96 ■lass To Meet In Red Cross Room The Mason Lillard Bible class will meet at the Red Cross room Monday evening at 8 o’clock with Mrs. George Royall, Mrs. French Graham, Mrs. Edworth Harris, \and Mrs. Joe Saylor acting as hostesses. It is especially requested that all members attend this meeting. 4-H Club Meets At Mountain Park The Mountain Park 4-H Club met for its monthly meeting with its leader, Miss Arlene Williams, in the Home Economics room at the Mountain Park school Thurs day evening. Miss Williams, assisted by members of the club, gave a demonstration on canning peas in the steam pressure cooker. At the conclusion of the meet ing a refreshment course of strawberry short cake topped with whipped cream, was served to the members, and a social hour was enjoyed. Presbyterians To Meet Monday The Woman’s Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church will meet Monday evening at the church at 8 o’clock. All members are urged to attend. Wesleyan Guild Holds Session The Wesleyan Service Guild met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Jones Holcomb, with Mrs. Roy Kane acting as asso ciate hostess. Devotionals were conducted by Miss Mary Hendren, after which Miss Bettie Allen presented the program. She was assisted by Miss Oph.elia Paul and Miss Hen dren. Fourteen members were present for the session. One new member, Mrs. Evelyn Kutzler, wa§ enrolled. Mrs. Ma son Lillard was a special guest of the meeting. Nice Selection Of Non-Rationed Group Meeting To Be Held Monday A group meeting of the Wom an’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church will be held at the church Monday af ternoon at 3:30. Mrs. E. L. Rice will be in charge of the Bible study. Gibbs-Harrell Wedding June 19 The following invitations have been issued in this city: “Reverend and Mrs. Alfred Coke Gibbs request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Isobel Jane to Doctor James Andrew Harrell, on Tuesday, the nineteenth of June at eight o’clock in the evening, Broad Street Methodist Church, Statesville, North Carolina.” Miss Gibbs is formerly of this city, and now of Asheville. Doctor Harrell is the son of Dr. and Mrs. R. B. Harrell, of this city. Bridge Party Honors Guests Honoring Miss Arlene Topping, of Methuem. Mass., and Miss Jane Key, of Lynchburg, Va., Miss Mabel Cathey Leeper entertained at a pretty party at her home on Circle Court Friday afternoon. Pink sweet peas beautifully ar ranged in silver bowls were u$ed in the rooms where tables were placed for bridge. High score prize went to Miss Topping. Miss Leeper presented the guests of honor with a remem brance. A delicious dessert course was served at the conclusion of the afternoon to the following guests: Misses Bette McNeely, Virginia Graham, Mary Vance McAdams, Beulah Yates and Glenda Nor man. Miss Smith Bride of Sgt. R. P. Land Mss Bernice Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Smith, of this city, became the bride of Sergeant Robert Paul Land, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Lar ' of Anderson, Ind., in a lovely jere mony Friday evening at 8:30 o’clock in the chapel of Charlotte Memorial hospital. Rev. Howard Wilkinson, assist ant pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated before a back ground of greenery, candelabra holding cathedral tapers, and white gladioli and feverfew. Miss Annie Parks Kirkpatrick, organist, >played Schubert’s “Ser enade” and “I Love You Truly” by Jacobs-Bond. Miss Judy DuBose, of Jefferson, S. C., sang “Because” by d’Hardelot. The wedding march from “Lohengrin” was used for the processional, and Miss DuBose sang “The Lord’s Prayer” for the benediction. Men delssohn’s march was used for the recessional. The bride wore an ivory satin wedding gown made with a net yoke outlined in seed pearls, leg o-mutton sleeves ending in calla points over the hands, a fitted bodice, and a full skirt which ex tended into a train. Her finger tip veil of bridal illusion was worn with a tiara of orange blossoms, and she carried a prayer book top ped with white orchids. The bride’s only ornament was a strand of pearls, gift from the bridegroom. Ira Duke Walters was best man. Miss Betty Jeanne Brittain, of Conover, classmate of the bride, was maid of honor, and she wore a pink nef, gown fashioned with a round neckline, short puffed sleeves, fitted waistline, and a gathered skirt. She carried a nosegay of mixed flowers. Mrs. Smith, mother of the bride, wore a navy blue dress with white accessories and a shoulder bou quet of gardenias. Later the couple left on a wed ding trip, after which the bride will return to resume her training as a student nurse at Memorial hospital, in Charlotte, and the bridegroom will return to Camp Butner. For travel the bride wore a fuchia crepe dress with white accessories and an orchid shoulder corsage. Mrs. Land is the attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Smith and received ''her educa tion in the schools of Western North Carolina. At present she is a student at the Memorial Hos pital School of Nursing, in Char lotte. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Land, of Anderson, Ipd., where he received his education, before entering the service he was connected with the IndianA branch of Delco Mo tor company and after two years’ duty overseas he is stationed at Camp Butner, at Durham. Letter of Thanks Is Received Here The women of the Roman’s Missionary Society of the First Baptist church have received a letter of thanks from an Italian family in Rome to whom the so ciety has been sending boxes. ' Five boxes of necessities a week have been going for eleven weeks to the Tedsco family in Rome. This letter was the first indica tion that the gifts have been re ceived. Each of the circles of the Mis sionary Society have sent boxes, with a different group being re sponsible each week. Lineherry-Daniel Vows Are Spoken Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Lineberry, of Jonesville, announce the mar riage of their daughter, Jean Marylon, to Grier Daniel, son of Mrs. S. W. Daniel, and the late Mr. Daniel, of Charlotte. The wedding was solemnized in Yorit, S. C., on June 9, with Judge E. Gettys Nunn officiating, using the double ring, ceremony. The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mullus, of Charlotte, who were maid of honor and best man. The bride was beautifully dressed in a white street length dress of pique, with which she used red jaccessories. Her cor sage was of fed rose buds. Mr. Daniel holds a position as foreman with the Astlundh Tree Expert Company. Mr. and Mrs, Daniel will re side temporarily in Hickory. Miss McAdams Honors Guests Miss Mary Vance McAdams honored her guest, Miss Jane Key, of Lynchburg, Va., when she entertained at a bridge party at her home on Cedar street Satur day evening. Sharing honors with Miss Key was Miss Arlene Topping, also a guest in this city. Roses were attractively ar ranged in the rooms where ta bles were placed for bridge. High score in the progressions went to Miss Mabel Cathey Leeper. Miss McAdams presented the honorees and Miss Edna Lou Smith, of Fairmont, guest of Mrs. E. W. McDaniel, with remem brances. ' At the conclusion of the play an iced course was served by the hostess. Mrs. Ralph Cook Honors Daughter Little Miss Ellen Cook, daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Cook, was honored at a pretty party at her home on Gwyn Avenue Tuesday afternoon in celebration of her fourth birthday anniver sary. The seventeen guests enjoyed various games and contests dur ing the hours between 3:30 and 5 o’clock. Prizes for the contests went to Mary Ann Johnson, Gail Eidson and Marilyn Parks. The guests were invited into the dining room, where a hand some birthday cake was cut and served with Ice cream. The cake was centered on the table beau tifully arranged • with roses and other garden flowers. Ambum-Brendle Vows Solemnized A wedding of simplicity and charm was solemnized Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock, when Miss Patty Jane Ambum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Ambum, of Boonville, became the bride of James Harold Brendle, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Brendle, of this city. Rev. Herman Gorman, pastor of the bride, officiated us ing the double ring ceremony. The wedding • was solemnized at the Ambum home in Boonville and only members of the imme diate families attended. The vows were spoken before an altar of greenery, with bask ets of magnolias beautifully ar ranged against a background of ivy and fern. A profusion of gar den flowers were used through out the home. Prior to the ceremony a pro gram of nuptial music was ren dered by Mrs. Carmen Richard son, of Boonville. The tradition al wedding march was used. The couple entered together unattended. The bride was handsomely attired in a white palm beach suit with which she used black accessories. Her corsage was an orchid. Mrs. Brendle was graduated from the Boonville high school, class of ’44. For the past year she has been employed at the Boonville post office. Mr. Brendle is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Brendle. He graduated from city schools and attended Wake Forest Col lege. At; present he is associated with his father in the firm of F. A. Brendle & Son. Immediately following the cer emony the couple left for a hon eymoon trip to Western North Carolina.
