Miss Alice Roosevelt today showed to her friends mnie of tho gifts which she received in the Orient, among them the handsome white satin and pearl inlaid screen, nhich was ope of tho Mikado's souven . irs. ; .she has a fine collection of fans, some very dainty pearl and satin, and others rery fancy affairs, intended for dee native purposes. There are nearly 9fty of these, and they make one of tho best collections of Oriental fans sver seen in this city. Miss ltooscvclt intends to give small fifts to every member of the party ivhich accompanied her and Mr. Longs tvorth, her fiance, to the Philippines, : md they will lie selected from . these louvenirs. The present which Miss Roosevelt received from the KuUan of 3ulu was not a ring, but two very fine ind well-matched pearls. These Miss Roosevelt has already given to her 3a nee, and will have them made into i ring as a memento of this memorable :rlp. '., . '--' '-'' It was learned today that the pres nts, which were reported as worth from $20,000 to $100,000 before their nival in this country, did not come mywhere near even the smaller amount it the appraisement in tho custom otise. The amount which the Presi lout's daughter paid to the customs lollector of the port of Georgetown .aas exactly 1(W.15. . This appraisement was in rigid con ' formtiy with, the law, and there was tfaot the least aofMinown t tU Pr4 ident's danghlor. Miss Roosevelt paid the amount herself, from her own in xtoine. Qua ijuaiul . three-logged chair oi San Francisco, Dee. 16. Dr. Albert B, Atkins, of this city, says he has proved, by an experiment made in tho stock yards, that brain action is an electrical phenomenon. The apparatus consisted of two plati num electrodes connected with a very sensitive galvanometer. The electrodes were inserted in two lobes of the brain of a living steer. , The needle of the galvanometer was deflected four points on the scale and remained so for nearly six minutes. then the animals throat was cut. Immediately the needle deflected nine teen points in the same direction. Then the needle gradually returned to its nor mal position. As no battery was used, Mr. Atkins is of the opinion that the electrical cur rent indicated on the galvanometer originated iu the animal's brain; in other words, that it was the brain ac tion itself. Dr. Atkins had prcvioudy demon strated that electrical force is developed iu the lungs and hearts of animals. teakwood is among the larger gifts, and there are some rare pieces of Royal Batsuma, one of them more than 200 years old.
