Mrs. James. Smith 'died at her home near Midway, Davidson county, Satur day in her ninetv-seventh year. The funeral services were held Sunday, con- ; ducted bv the pastor of the M. K church, the Rev. M. II. Vestal. Mrs.! Smith had been blind for about tiftv five years, but she her home at her pi four grandchildren who are residents of this city. Mr. Smith died four years ago at the age of ninety-two. They were married in 1S31 and have had six children, thirty-two grandchildren and fifty-two great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren, and the fimr generations of descendants were all rep resented at the .funeral.'- Mrs. Smith was widely known and had numerous friends and was in many respects a re markable woman. The completion ot the Watt dormitory has added very much to the appearance of the Davidson College campus, and the convenience of the students. This build ing was donated to. the college by the lion. The faculty as Well as the students are looking forward to "college day" on Wednesday, October 24, on which day the iii Statesville on October 2:t, will pay in Statesville on October 23, will make the institution a visit. Among these will be many of the nlunini, and the stu dents will hear some very interesting talks. A general holiday will be given on 'this day and committees have been appointed to see that every one shall have a warm reception. Although the prospects for the foot ball team at the beginning of the sea son w;cre not very encouraging, they are as good now as ever before, and all are expecting a very successful year. The manager has arranged a very hard sched ule for the season, but thus far the led and black have been victorious over their opponents. It is a matter of doubt as to liow long the court will be in session. It usually holds less than a week.
