The meas ure will provide that Mrs. Levi P. Mor ton, Mrs. Howard Townsend, of Mount Vernon, and Mrs. Donald McLean, of NewXotk-city, with three commission ers to be. appointed by the Governor, constitute a commission to take charge of the New York State exhibit at the fair, which is to be held from Septem ber 18th to December 31st of this year. The bill will appropriate $25,000 for the expenses of the commission. It was the intention of the commit tee to allow the bill to go to the Gov ernor without naming the women who are to constitute a part of the commis sion. A communication was received from the Colonial Dames of America, requesting the appointment of the three women who have been named. It was in order not to place the Governor in the position of appointing Mrs. Morton, that she and her colleagues were named by the committee. TOM DIXON EN A WRECK. It would be eenseless to say that he was not v highly educated, simply because he never went through college. He was one of that long list of elf-educated men of which our country is so proud. No other land can boast of so honored a list of self-made men. Deprived of the educational advantages which the more favored enjoy, such men make .the most of their opportunities, and by their high-minded spirit of independence, aDd indomitable perseverence, climb to the highest rounds of the ladder o success and fame. Ex-Secretary Rusk did not inherit his wide knowledge of Sricui ture and practical farming. ' He acquired it by studying nature, and reading the proper books. There is not a boy in North Carolina to day having the ordinary allowance of intellect who may not make himself felt in the world as much as did Mr. Rusk. ttnrWl honks are the beat friends them he may become the daily companion f the greatest minds that the world has ever known. All that their wide experience has taught them, they are ready to tell the boy who reads. In the Encvcloniedia Britannioa the greatest scholars of thii gen eration have not only given their own best thoughts, but have care fully kathered. classified and condensed the best which the great men of all ages had to offer to the world. When ex-Secretary Rusk was a boy it would have cost him a small fortune to purchase the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and had he been able to purchaee it, he would, indeed, have possessed the greatest ref erence library then known to man, but it would have been meager compared with the great ninth edition, revised and brought up to date, as it is in the new edition, offered to the subscribers by the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Wa Rftv that everv intellieent hna t Letter nrmortnnitv to become a erea man than had the Hon Jeremiah Rusk, for any boy can earn and eave Ten Cents a Day, and that will buy the very best library in print.
