The greater part of the Democratic State press seems to be in line with the Populist - party and is preaching daily and weekly the princi ples as enunciated by Senator Marion Ltutler. I do not say that Senator But ler is a bad man': in fact, .1 believe to the contrary;, but there was never an individual in all history more terribly abused and villifled than he daring the last - campaign and yet nis - abusers. many Democratic newspapers and so called Democrats, are now savior. well, Butler is a eood fellow, any way. and thoroughly believes in Democratic doctrine." I despise such cant and in consistency. The free and unlimited eoinage of silver is one of the big planks in the platform, of the I'opuust party and It is funny to a man who looks on and watches the Democrats trying to steal; this plank, I don't know how long this new party" will last, bat it is going to be here in 1-1896. and there is going to be fusion with the same party as last year. There is no trouble among j uepuDiicans and fopuiists in tnis state, but there is serious disturbance in the ranks of the Democratic party. Who is going to bring order out of chaos' Who is to save the old ship? The waters are still troubled. The Observer saw the hand-writing on 'the wall during the last campaign. While the News and Observer and other promi nent papers were predicting a glorious and certain victory for Democracy, you were throwing out the danger signals. If we could only be induced to follow such men as Cleveland and Carlisle! They are Democrats, not for office, but for principle. Free silver in itself is not a principle of ' Democracy. The national Democratic nor the Republi can convention will declare for it. Both of these national conventions will de clare for sound money. Don't you be lieve it? Then what a strange condi tion vof political affairs '. .National and State Democratic platforms antagonis tic to each other : Mr. Editor, I want to ask a question nlease answer if you can. Who is the leader of the Democratic party in North Carolina to-day ? 1 am anxious to know. There has never been a time since 1868 but the question might readily have been answered until now. Who is to be the Gideon for Democracy ? Is it not time he was found ? The Republi cans and Populists have leaders and even now thev are ready for the battle. Times are lively here. Factories run ning on full and extra time; dwellings being improved and new ones in process of building. Col. J. O. Pickard, the efficient superintendent of the Randle- man Cotton Mills, is preparing to have erected-a commodious store house. His son, Mr. Will Pickard, will sell goods when the house is completed. From the country adjacent, good re ports as to the crops are coming in. This is to be a year of plenty. The people seem cheerful until some fellow begins to tell them that the thin? is sure to smash up unless we get free silver. Not withstanding the wiles of the politician, the young farmer as he returns from the field this fall, will joyfully sing: "Corn In the crib. Money in the pocket, Baby in tne cradle. And little wife to rock it." T. A SOUVENIR FOB THE EXPOSITION. Bitters, the best strengthening medicine made. The weekly world's shipments to Europe showed a considerable lalUnsr-off In connection with this Beerbohm say enormous wheat shipments from Kusla daring the past nine weeks are striking features In the sitnation, but indications point-to a -decided falling-ofT, with lea disposition on the part of farmers .-to sell, owing to poor crop prospects. News from the Northwest was of a conflicting charac ter, (tome of the bod reports received yes terday wero denied, while others were very unfavorable. Total receipts at primary points were aeala extremely lt?ht, only about 37, COO bushels, against 117,000 last year. Exports were light, but to offset this there was a goad cash demand noted, ab mt Kil,CJ0 bushels being sold lor shipment to Toledo and about 0,00 to interior point. This caused a flrru feeling and brought some buying orders. Bra-Jstreet made a decline in the world's visible of SteOjC-JO bushels. Closing cables reported continental market lower, with the exception of Antwerp Exports of ccn at the seaboard vent lib eral, amounting to nearly SOOOOO bushel This caused some strength, but the market as a rule was very Inactive. Confederate Veterans Project a Scheme to Krect a Memorial of Him at New Orleans. Washington, July 23. The initial steps were taken at one of the river re sorts just below Washington last night, looking to the erection, in New Orleans, of a statue to General W. S. Hancock. the hero of Gettysburg. The subject was fully discussed at an excursion giv en by the Confederate veterans and at tended by several hundred Grand Army men as invited guests. The arrange ments for this work hae been put in the hands of General Heth, and a plan will soon be outlined.for the rais ingofa fund among the soldiers who served in the Confederate armv. Ii was thought to be fitting that the statue should oe erected in the representative city of the extreme South, the idea hav been suggested by the recent erection in Chicago, by Union veterans, of n monument to the six thousand Confed erate dead ouried there.
