Mr. and Mrs. W. E. lounts laid out an elegant spread before a number of invited guests last Saturday night. It was all that the most fastidious epicure could have desired in the way of edi bles. This is a prohibition town, and the gracious, affable and hospitable manner in which the guests were treat ed seemed to increase or add to the de licious flavor of the tempting viands and to sharpen the appetites of the par takers of it. Washington, Dec. 30. John Karel, United States consul general at St. Pe tersburg, has made a report to the State Department, which has some interest in Connection with the utterly unsup ported rumors about Russia having re cently tendered gold to the United States. After giving the values of Rus sian gold currency under a recent ad justment of the Imperial Bank, Mr Karel concludes his communication with this paragraph: "I understand that the object of the Minister of Finance of the Russian Em pire is to accumulate into the imperial vaults as much gold as possible, with view to establishing in future the Rus sian finances on gold basis. A pitched battle occurred Wednesday between the inhabitants of the towns of Huitzl and San Juan del Estado as 4,he outgrowth of the bitter feeling that has existed for some time between those places con cerning their boundary lines.
