GOLDSBORO. N. C MAR. 31. 1895. PUBLISHED BT ARGUS PUBLISHING THE GO. Joseph C RoWnaoa, Editor, I Walter A. BoniU, BusinetM Man Vr. f Entered at the Post Office at Gold benv N. C. as Second-Claas Matter. AMERICA AGAINST EL' ROE. Englaou has sent an ultimatum to Nicaragua, giving that lie public aerea weeks in which to pay an indemnity of $75,000 for the alleged wrong done to toe British Consul Hatch at the time of his deportation by Nicaraguan troops from Bluefields. England has other claims against the Central American state, wRich she says may be submitted to an arbitration committee, on which no United States or other Ameri can representative shall be al lowed to serve. Pending the consideration of these latter, she makes her imperative de roand for $75,000, and backs it up with a threat to occuy Nicaraguan territory as security for its pay ment Admiral Jouett, U. . N., cites as a precedent for England's action tbatof ourown government 1853, when Captain Hollings. of theCyane, bombarded Grey town, t) avenge an insult offered to United States Minister Borland; but he overlooks the fact that England protested against that act and even offered a show of forcible opposition until the guns or the Cyane, trained across the docks of H. B. M. ship Express, persuaded the British captain to consider discretion the better part of valor, and get out of the Jin of Are. Will England now attempt to bombard Grey town or occupy Bluefields? Not if Ad miral Meade be on the spot with one of our new vessels not built for backing down or out. Germany and France also are reported to be contemplating demonstration against Venezuela; and Spain is debating whether or not to comply with Secretary Gresham's peremptory demand for apology and reparation on account of the firing, by one o her cruisers, on the United States Mail steamer Allianca on the 8th inst. ilence arises the newspaper rumor that an European alliance is being formed against the United States; followed by the other rumor that the Latin re publics of Mexico. Central and South America, offer to join us in an offensive and defensive al liance against the old world. Both rumors may be dissmissed as doubtful or worse. We have only one enemy in Europe or in the world, and she will not dare occupy Nicaraguan territory or pursue her robbery of Venezuela, once our government says, "Hands off!" France is our tradi tional friend, so is Russia. Ger many has no ground of quarrel with us, outside of a comme.cia question adjustable on a business basis. No European power can afford to challenge the United States to fight; and even were new "Holy Alliance" to be form- ed against us. North and South America could defy the world in arms. The "Doctrine- of President Monroe was respected when we were a handful of people, and it should be enforced now that we are a mighty nation able to pro tect our own rights and tl ose of the less powerful Latin republics to the" south of us.
