NEWSPAPERS AND THE PUBLIC. The Rev. Dr. Henson, of Chicago, in a recent discourse, uttered the lol loping strong and timely truths: A very large number of newspapers are printed that are unfit to read in a decent house. Dana says that it is the business of newspapers to"putlish the news. I deny it There is great deal that happens that has no business in print anywhere. It is not decent It may be news, but it is newt that ought never to see the light of day. There have to be police courts, and so there have to be sewers; but in God's name let the sewers run under ground! It is the business of a newspaper to publish such news as the public ought to know; such news as is fit for the public's moral health. It is custom ary for everybody to charge the saloons with the abomination ol des olation. The saloon is responsible lor a great deal, there is no doubt about that murders, thefts, burgla ries and innumerable crimes of the deepest dye but it is not responsi ble lor everything. I tell you, de bauched literature is responsible, perhaps more vit.illy. deeply and diroctly than the saloon. The saloon simply debauches the boy and men as a rule, but here is a subtle, insid ious, pernicious, infamous influence that debauches the whole of society, including the young members. Congressman Mills is Mr. Blaine seems to be satisfied that he is to be the next Secretary of State, as he hat just rented bouse in Washington for tea years at $2,700 per ye r. The Seward man sion, which Mr. Blaine has leased, is one of the oldest in Washington and one ol the most famous. It was built a halt century ago by Commo dore Rogers. After his death it be came a fashionable bo irding house and then a club house. It was from an upper window of this club bouse that Philip Barton Key carried on his handkerchief flirtation with the wife of Daniel Sickles, who was liv ing in the equally famous Stockton Sickles house, on the west end of the square. The trees in Lafayette square were not then grown so tall as to interfere with the pastime which ended in a tragedy. It was almost in front of Mr. Blaine's new house that Sickles shot Key and into the club house the wounded man was carried. ACROSTIC. if!""' During the month of August, while the great Paris ELxosition is in full blast, there will be held in Paris a great congress of all the wage earners of the civilized world. It is proposed to form a union there that will embrace all the labor organiza tions of all lands. It is expected that a thousand delegates will attend the congress and take part in its proceedings. In a recent interview with the Wash ington correspondent ol the Ne York Herald, he said : "The battle was finally decided against us by the old sectional outcry against the Con federate brigadiers. A gentleman from Minnesota, whom I was pre sented to since the election, said that he had been obliged to leave the Re publican party becaaseof its high tana news, and lor a time bis neigh bors were with him, but hen the pinch Came they were driven back into the ranks by the sectional scare.
