Paul's Cburch yard, London, the Yooug Men's Christian Association was formed t June, 1844. .U now- numbers 600,000, witb. branches in ; every civilized land. George Williams, a salaried clerk, started it. He began open air talks. So the good work began, and behold the results. From an account iu the Washing ton Post we take tni: . 'One of the things required ol the members Of Mr. Williams' little band was work among the employ ees of other great business houses in London. This they carried on with a will, and thus the Young' Men's Christian Associations grew apace in London'. Six years after the beginning of the association in Lon don a student of the University of the City of iNew : Xork-r-hw name was George Vanderlip went ? to j England on a pleasure trip, and ar ranged to send letters from abroad Ui a Boston newspaper. The very first of his letters to be printed described the Yonng Men's Chris tian Association. This fell into the bands of an earnest Bostonian. who organized: the first branch in the United States December 29tn, 1850, in this country mere are more than a quarter of a million of mem bers, owning $16,000,000 oi proper ty, including 284 buildings. To is noble association has a strong hold upon the confidence and good will! or the people, 1'nis is being con stantly praotioally demonstrated. Jfrom the -rout we gather our data. There have in North Ameri oa been nineteen gifts oi buildings, valned in all at more than $1,000, 000; sixty-eight people have given sums ranging from $10,000 to $150, 000, making $2,000,000 in all, while other gifts have , amounted to at (east. $1,000,000 more. This gives a total in round numbers for the gifts which heve been drawn out by the worthy work-ofthe association of about $4,000,000. ' Two hundred and ninety-one of the Aorth American Associations own buildings valued at $15,154,. 960, and other real estate reaching $1,220,310 in value. The building in Chicago cost $1,700,000. But these by no means compass the total value of the property owned by the Young Men's Christian As sociations. They own much prop, erty in other countries. Since 1855 it has inoieased from 322 Associa tions to 5,109 in 1894. It it organized in twenty-eight lands Out of the way oonntries as Ceylon, Syria, China, Japan, South Africa, and South Amerioa are well sprinkled with the bands of earnest young Christians that make np this strange and mighty force. It has a great many consecrated, pious, spiritual minded Christians, and active workers while a great many do not manifest a high type of Christianity, but are something woroiy,-not to put it str inger, it is a noble army of young men as a whole, and they have accomplished great good in the half century of the existence of the Y. M. C. A. Long may it live, and may it increase in piety and good works with the in crease of numbers. Wil. Messen ger.
