THB Jotjbnal ia giving one biped, be alpa down a whole people, and then complains that bis belly is not full. A : Democratic paper, as in honor boaod, presents htm as the etu ' odiment of all good nesfl the meek and unostentatious possessor of tbe combined wisdom and vlrtne of Jeffdreon, Madison, Jackson and all the Apostles, bat anfortatiately. turronoded by a rebelliODS and nnregeuerate Oon- gress. .. ..,.,-".....,.. - . vny- tnis difference iu corres pondents! Why, they get their information fion different sources. And, then too, a, fellow is paid for what he writes, and It i often the case that a lis veil told is more rained tharTa bnngliogly expressed troth. Lies have their place in this world's economy, and very often they bring high prices. Bow are we to know what cor res pondent to believe ! By the char acter of the paper he represents. It is not every Republican paper that is a base calumniator, any more than every Democratic paper is an evangel of trnth. Bead papers of high character, A man who know anything of let ters, or has been schooled in busi ness affairs, cannot mistake the character of the papers tbtt almost daily come to him, and, if he is wise, be will reject tbe bad and hold fast to tbe good. Tbe part of tbe message that is ' of most interest to tbe people id . that concerning ihe currency; and of this there is every variety of : opinion. In Democratic oiroles, V Senator Brice calls it "a dream Senator Gorman says the President does cot seem to comprehend tbe logic of facts. Among Republicans it is criticised as visionary, imprac ticable, nonsensical. Looking at the message in tbe light in which ft is presented by too men as ana the opponents of tbe Administration,- we revert' to our original position, that little or nothing will be done in tbe remaining months of the fifty-third Congress, to re form the currency or further amend the tariff. On both questions the Democratic party is hopelessly di vided. Tbe free coinage of silver, so earnestly contended for by tbe Democracy of North Carolina and the South generally, has not the ghost of a chance; and State banks, if they come at all, will be State banks in name only. So much lor the utterfailure of the Democratic party to agree on questions of public policy. Had the Administration been thoronghly Democratic from the beginning to the end taking no council of Republicans, but giving its honors and its confidence to Democrats and Democrats only the condition of public affairs would have been vastly better.
