Mr. E. fl Hill, chairman of the road supervisors of this township has called a me tin; ot the members to-morrow to con sider (iiiestii)iis pertainrjg to the road. Mr Hill says their attention has been called to the road-bridges having gotten in bad or. d r but no money has been supplied for buying material ordoingthe work. Anoth er question that will be considered is how to work the Pembroke from the city limits to (he New Bridge a distance of about niile.'!. There is not a man left on this who is su'.ject lo road work there were only two and they hive moved away. Sir. Hill thinks that as Nni.v road near the city is being worked by subscription thus relieving those living on that road from the work thev lnve iieen accustomed to that their se-vic-s might be turned over to Pembroke road. Mr. Hill is no friend of the present sys tem ot working roads. He declares the law is impracticable because it specifies certain ones subjects to road duty and says they shall be workrd only so many days in the year and the service that can be thus obtained will not meet the requirements of keeping up tbe ma Is. Ho believes that the present law should be repealed and some new one, on a pnu licable plan substituted. ltlVKllAM IIABBOB WORK. C, April 24, 1893. t I believe that in the eight years of my service here this is the first testimonial I have given to a concert company, and it is. done cheerfully and heartily. The Swedish Quartette Company were with us two consecutive nights. It is no mean enco- nium to say that they pleased ana en hrtiiined a renresentative audience in this classic and cultured old city. : The members of tbe company are ladies and pentlemen, and not such coarse and unrefined persons as ws irequen try nave to deal with among similar travelling organi zations. ' They are musicians of high or der, but at tbe same time render such - se lections as please the popular taste. The Quartet is a fine combination of male voi ces, and their accompanist performs splen didly. , Thecompany deserves tn ncnest sucess. ' A T. Jamison, Gen'l Sec'y. THE COUNCIL INCOSKISTANT In Making a .Honllily Appropriation of 82 to tbe Naval Reserves and Refusing 822.50 to I lie New Kerne Fire Company Tor a Meeliuu- Room. Editor Jocrnal: I w by yi-ur issue of Dec. 4th, that tho Board ..! t ! y Council made an appropriutiou at u.u r last regular meeting ol ''2 (0 per month to the Naval Reserves. 1 am irulv glad to see the financial condition of tin- i ll-, so much better than it wm last u mm r. I think the Naval Reserve- a woiti.y ganization, and the appropriation ma lo by both, the city and county, is li g dv commendable, in older to maintain ami keep tho organization (oi-iher ami equipped, ready for service, should 1 1 1 ir services at any time be needed. In speaking of the tin incial condition of the city last sunum t I refer io the , time when the Board of City Coun. -il or Fire Dept. Com., told tho New B' r-ic steam Fire Co. o. l, that they um-i vacate their quartt rs, (which was t he brick building on Middle street,) on ai i oiint ol the city's not being able to pay the surd! sum of $22.50 per month rent. At this time the company owned their own b -sc carnage horse. The city had been f c luii him up to ab-nit tire time we were noiili. l to vacate. About this lime there was some little misunderstanding Ijetween our driver and the Fiie Department committee ot ihe city. 1 hey relused to pay our driver or bed our horse. Wo kept our driver al his pos', also our horso was kept in the liousi- ready lor service should lie be need ed. During llus lime there wasan alarm; our coinp iny w.is the first to respond aud ot on the lirst stream. V o paid our driver and asked ihe city il they would pay our feed bill lor the hors , which they absolutely refused to do. Atlc-r the water works caim- nil i-s. e were satisfied with doing awav w iih our eug ne and a part of our horsi-s. V- asked to let us retain our engine hou-e at a com of 22. 50 per month, we were refuse d this on account ol the city s being unable to pay the rent. We were offered by Hie city a shed at Mr. J. W. MeWarl s lively staole where we could keep our lu j car riage and horse, or we could Use Ihe lim ine shop on Ciaven street, which thev would consent to pay S'i.ntJ per inoriiii rent for. Neither of these places Horded i meeting room, which this company :nr the past thirty years has always had, an I one that it was not ashamed to invite id ling fireman or strangers into, We were offered by the city Ihe privi lege of using the Atlantic Niam Fire Eugine Co's., meeting room, which be longs to the city. We knowing that (he tVtlantics had carpeted their own room and ownt-d their own furniture, decided not to use their lncceting room hut to use the City Hall and put our apparatliis in ;'i" room adjoini' g t All nitics win re llu-y :i .d pieseid. At our first meeting iu ile' City II ill a committee from the Atlantic Sie.nn Fiiv Engine Co., came in and oil' -re 1 us tin use of their meeting room, furniture, etc. in a very courteous manner, for which , they will always have our gratitude mid appreciation. We accepted their court sy aud at present hold our meetings in the Atlantic's meeting room. I recite this incident to show the treatment that the New Borne Steam Fire Engine Company received by the city's financial condi tion. It may be useless for me to say any thing further ns to why the nporopr alion of $25.00 per month to the Navd lie serves looks inconsistant when the i ;iv couldn't pay $22.50 for 1 1 r quailr-is flow long has our fire company b.en do ing active service in this city? I think more than 30 years, about 20 ji:s of which time they own. d their appa a'.tus and rendered their services lo the city without any compensation. Not to my knowledge has the city eve:- made any donation to this company. I would there fore ask if the New Berne Steam Fire Ku giue Company is not us justly entitled to compensation as any organization that is now or ever has tendered its services lo the city. When the engine we at present have under our control was purchased, our company paid $1,100 on it in thu way of giving the old Amoskag engine, which was their individual properly. At our last meeting the Treasurer's report showed that more than $100 had been paid out by the Treasurer of the company during the past year in order to meet necessary ex penses. Has the city ever made a dona tion to this company ? Not to ac knowledge. I would like to know if our fire company is not entitled to sonic con sideration. Has the alarm ever been sounded at any time for the past 30 years that the N. B. S. F. E. Co. did not res pond ? No matter how hot or bow cold. A Member of N. B. S. F. E. Co. No. 1. Last Opportunity.
