Bell of Ced Point, was up to the cily yesterday. He informs us that small game is pretty abundant down that way now, partridges especially, while doves, squirrels, etc., abound in good numbers, and ducks arc also quite plentiml in Wluto Oak river. . Two of our young townsmen, Messrs. II. L. Gibus and C. B. Foy. returned from a hunting expedition, having inch bagyeil a tine wild turkey. They said they preferred turkeys to the mallards which President Cleveland has so success fully been shooting in the Palmetto Slate. An ox with a cart attached took alarm at the incoming mail train yesterday morning ana took right down the track ahead of the engine scattering the light- wood with which the cart, was loaded as it went The ox turned up Pollock street when it was reached and was finally overtaken by the owner and quieted down. In addition to receiving contributions of goods in the hamper placed at Messrs. Hackbum & Willett's store for Christmas distribution, the King's Daughters are also muKin ; an enort to raise some cash to be applied the same way. To accom plish the latter object they have made a number of lounge covcis and placed them tor sale at Mr. J.J. Baxter s. The postmaster has received a supply of new stamps which are now ou sale in place of the defective ones which have been retired. For some months letters which bore the appearance of having had a stamp upon them have been forwarded without the usual delay in such cases. The new stumps will stick and letters must be fully paid. State Check Received. C. C. Clark, Lieut. Commanding of the Naval Reserves has received a check for 250, the amount they are annually enti tled to receive from the State. This, in addition to the $25.00 monthly from Craven county, and $25 00 monthly trom the city makes ?850.UU annually, which at last puts the Reserves on a very good footing financially. Stores Putting- on Aim. Business among our mere uauts generally appears to be pretty good, especially among thosecatering to the holiday trade. A number of the business houses are deco rating their windows with handsome and inviting ware, and beautifying their Ironts with mosses and evergreens, and displays in electric lighting. It is indeed a pleasure to be a resident of a place where the business men are so fully awake in keeping up with the times by advertising and shoving their business so prominently before the public. Keep your place of business as inviting as possible, be agreeable to your cus tomers and deal with tuem fairly, and you have gone a long ways towards building up the business. Let no such thing as a gloomy countenance or discouraging con versation pervade your premises, but look forward and continue to strike for the betterment of yourself an I the community in which you live. Yes, The Journal is proud to claim residence with such an enterprising and progressive people, the leaders of whom are well enough known without any par ticularizing on our part. Corainc And toina. The Entertainment Highly Creima ble and Greatly Enjoyed. The Collegiate Institute entertainment was of a much higher order than was ex. pected from the slight announcement of it made. The recitations showed unmis tably that Prof. Mendenhall, who gives his personal attention to the elocutionary instruction in that school considers decla mation no suborbinate feature. The reci tations were surprisingly realistic. The music both vocal and instrumen tal was fine. The pupils manifested a deliberation n I confidence in performing and a skilhul delicacy of touch that did credit not only tnthur inmate abilities, but to the talent of Miss Elgie whose instruc tion led them in the few months ot her stay lieie up to the point of excellence exhibited last night Miss Elgie herself also npp-ared before the audience S'-i - surg a l played en irancingly, and wn uurndy cm orcd, but Prof. Mendenhall declined to have any ex tension of the programme wli t ever. The entertainment chwd at half past nine with every one deliglned. Hearty con giamlalions were exb nded to both pupils and teachers. The next session of the school opens Wednesday, Jan'y. 2d, and all should be on hand promptly lor the remainder of the years' wotk. Prof. Mendenhall in vites the parents of the students to visit the school at any time during the session and see lor themselves the work that is beiu done, not to wait for p cial occa sion like last night. The school is a good one and deserves to command patronage from a much wider territory than the city. THE til FT SERVICE. A Delightful Celebration and an En tire Success. The Presbyterian gift service for the Orphans'jIIome passed off very pleasantly. The children joined in heartily and in good time in the singing of the Christmas carols and the music by the orchestra was delightful. Each Sabbath School scholar present made a presentation in person and many of the ad nits did likewise. The gifts were sufficient to fill a box almost shoulder high and were in large variety toys, clot hinr. candy, groceries, &c. It was a nohlo ottering and will do much towards making a merry Christmas at the Home The box will be lorwarded so that the gifts will be received Christmas day. PALACE KINO HEATER. One Placed In Mr. T. A. Grccu's Residence. Mr. T. A. Green has put into his resi dence, a Palace King hot water house heater, such as Mr. C. E. Foy has had in his residence for some little time. It is filaced in the cellar, and hot water circn ating through seven radiators warms every room and hall in the bouse. ' It can be regulated from the sitting room to give nny temperature wanted but it is meant to furnish n warmth of seventy degrees, which it will maintain in any weather even the severest. Tho work of putting it in was per formed by Mr. J. C. Green, and the healer has been examined by the one who sold it and the workmanship prououncedas penect as tbougn it been put up by some one making a special ry of working on that Kind of healer. The beater gives a warmth the nearest approach to natural heat of any artificial means known, and tuev are giving eucii satis ac'ion that Mr. J. C. Green intends to handle them for the home market. Another Foreifn Missionary. The Rev. W. B. Lee was appointed to work in the Brazil Mission at the recent session of the North Carolina Conference. He will be accompanied by his wife who is also to be employed in the mission work. 1 his makes two N on h Uarollna preachers in the foreign mission field, Bro. VV. A. Wilson, having gone to Jaoan from within the hounds of the Western North Carolina Conierence. To make sure that there weie no cases which were not under a physician's care, the Fouith and Fifth wards, the two lar jest in the city, were carefully canvassed from lions,: to house and only one case of sii kiu-ss found in both wards.
