This morning at 2 o'clock (Joanty - Commissioner Heoiy Octman, who live? in the aootbern part of the county, was awakened. Going to the door he met Leavitr, who was ' so cold he coald hardly explain what was the matter. Finally Oct man was made ro understand and ' they went ont to Leavitt'a boggy : Both tbe young ladies were nnable to speak, aud unconscious. They were named to tbe boose and ever ibing done to restore them to conseiotsenesa, bnt up to ten o clock this morning all efforts bad proved f otile. Francis II., last King of Naples, or tbe two Siciys, died at Aroo to-day, aged flity-eignt years. ' " An Ear Mode of Kping Warm. Tbe Scientific American calls at tention to an easy method of keep ing wagn wben otner ana more common means are not available. It is well known to tbe medioial pro fession but probably not olten nsed. It is simply taking deep in spirations. It mentions the oase tbat occur ; red to the writer last winter wben, walking briskly along, be became nncomtortably cold; feet and hands very cold, and dh cars so tbat he had frequently to apply his heavily . gloved hands. The whole surface of his skin was unpleasantly chilled; - and the coldness running np and down his spinal column and radiat ing over tbe body and extremities. He then began to take in deep for ced inspirations, holding the air as long as possible before expulsion. After a few inhalations the sur face of his body grew warmer, with t general sense ot' comfort. The -' warmth extended to bis ears. They , (. grew agreeably warm, and in a . t short time bio hands aud feet be? . came warm and he soon became as comfortable as if he bad beep be- ' fore a glowing fire. These happy results obtained irom ints simple metnod are pro- oamy owing to several causes. The cold chilN tbe surface of the body and contracts the superficial bloodvessels, usually affecting firat- nands, teet and ears, and afterward thy general body surfaoe. Contrac ' tion of the blood vessels results In less blood and stagnation of its current, this rendering he ir ungues moo auio to resist com. ueep -, inspirations stimulate . the blood current and by , expanding and compressing the lungs hasten the How of. blood through this organ - and by the increased oxygen in haled, the blood is thoroughly ox- ygenated and more beat neoessar. ily produced. ' ' The suggestion is valuable in counteracting the effects of cold, ia riding, driving, standing eta., in stimulating the flagging oironla den without moving a step. It may arrest fatal congestive trou bles, sucb as pleurisies and pnen- - noniaa. , rVtob-Beri. Tbe ceremony wb performed in the Morehead City Baptist cborcu tueeday, Do. 18, at 8 . p. m by Eev. N. M. Jones, SALE, LIVEIIY AND BOARDING STABLES. SINGULAR PHENOMENON. (Volcanic Underground Noise Re sembling the Tolling of a Bell. A singular phenomenon occurs on !the borders of the Red sea at i place called Nakous, where the in termittent underground sounds lhave been heard for an unknown number of centuries. It is situated at about half a mile's distance from the shore, whence a long reach of sand ascends rapidly to a height of almost three hundred feet. This reach i3 eighty feet wide, and re sembles an amphitheater, being railed in by low rocks. The sounds coming up from the ground at this place recur at intervals of about an hour. They at first resemble a low murmur, but before long there is heard a loud knocking, somewhat like the strokes of a bell, and which, at the end of five minutes, becomes so strong as to agitate the sand. The explanation of this curious phenomenon given by the Arabs is that there is a convent under the ground, and these are sounds of the bell which the monks ring for prayers. So they call it Nakous, which means a bell. The Arabs affirm that the noise so frightens their camels when they hear it as to render them furious. Scientists attribute the sounds to suppressed volcanic action probably to the bubbling of gas or vapors under ground. Philadelphia Ledger. When People Talk. Francisquo Sarcey, the French critic, writes in a recent feuilleton that he never replies to attacks made on him, because he is convinced that the publio judges a man by the sum total of his own work, and not by what a casual enemy may sav about nun.
