Alouzo Pettipher, col., one of the two brothers who have long owned and oper ated Pettipher's Ferry from New Berne to the opposite side of Ncuse river, died suddenly Monday night presumably., of heart disease. At the underwriters sale of the Boston schooner Richard A. Spoffanl lecently stranded at Ocracoke, the wreck sold for eighteen dollars. Tl'e Spoffard cost new four years ago sixty-eight thousand dollars. The Spring-like temperature of the last few days is to give place to wintry weath er nsain; yesterday the weather bureau predicted a cold wave coming. The tele gram said it would be below freezing by tonight. Mr. J. T, Eaton, of Morehcad City, who went up to Raleigh a few days ago came down to New Berne Tuesday night. He says there are .en other men there for every one that is a member of the Legislature, and thirty-live from one couDty alone that went to be door keeper. An elaborate irtiele upon the courrency question will appear in the Journal ol tomorrow from ttie pen of one of our townsmen who is thoroughly qualified to intelligibly treat this subject which is at the present engaging the minds of the country. That Beaufort Lynching. The Washington Reformer alsj speaks plainly as well as pointedly when it says: "This is the result of the guilty going uupunislied by '.he Law. If the Law was properly executed by the Authorities the lynch law would come to an end.'' Good quantities of Iresb fish are now coming up dally over the W. N. & N. Railroad to New Berne shippers. There were two .thousand fine trout up yesterday. Sunday Capt. Ben Pigott, of the Viola, arrived Irom Beaufort with a cargo of mullets, small in size but large in quantity. He had 76'boxes barrel boxes of them.. In number there ware sixty-five thousand. This was as large a lot of fresh mullets as we ever knew to coma in, Messrs. t ur ate E. Gaskill & Co. puxhased the whole lot. Wild Same In Abundance. Smith, the banker, of Newberne, N. C, spent two days in the city the past week, lie is a gentleman who started hie with a simple capital ol good character, industry and energy but today he can make loans ot if 10,000 with out embarrassment, cairying on a large banking business, and controlling many thousands of dollars. In his conversation and speeches he throws out many help lul hints, which cm not fail lo be sugges tive and useful to those who are privileg ed to hear him. We enjoyed a pleasant hour with him at tho residence of his brother, Mr. Silas Smith ot this city; and we only wish that his experience and advice could be given to thousands ot our young people in this city and state. He brings a splendid report of the high esteem in which our friend Rev. G. Fuizier Miller is held in New beroe, and speaks of him as one of his much prized friends. While bis visit here was short, it has madcaspleud d impression and we hope to moot him again.
