Piatt opposed Harrison's renomina tion and worked desperately but vaiuly for Blaine in 1893 He went W the Convention in; was .ver, abrising and ridiculing Harrison, but the latter wag renominated, xie ha repeated thia performance with McKinley now, and has carried it to such extromesthat he cannot ': make bis peace with McKinley on .any trm of much value to himself. ' In the meantime Quay kept quiet till he saw that McKiulep was "'sure 10 win." when he went to his home ana conferred with him, so as to be quite sure of his financial sounduess, and thea camo out squarely for htm. lie is now predicting his nomination, and; is good a McKinley man as there is to be found, i'latt a pass- ionjov talk has always been nis worst eueray, and it has undone him more irredeemably this time than usnal.-N. Y. World. r;: : z CONSERVATISM NEEDED. The near accroach of the- time when the Democratic State Conven tion is to be held, ought to cause i pause among Democrats in their over-zealous advocacy of free silver, or the present existing standard, and make thera raise the question, is the currency issue, not merely the pre ' eminent question for the Democrats of North Carolina to solve, but is it go vitally important to the Democ racy of this State, that the party can afford to split upon it, by any, fur ther discussion among themselves? So far ai the question among the Democrats of thia State, regarding the free coinage of silver at lb to .1, is concerned, it is undoniably settled already; so far as its presen tation to the . Democratic State Convention is concerned, it is all over but the shouting. . And yet certain silverites in this State would attempt to alarm the free coinage people with the cry that the crold bnirs are nlannine to capture delegates, and perhaps con trol the Convention 'on the 25th insta -JY . t " - This kind of talk is the veriest bosh, and is calculated to both flame party members, and injuro all chances of Democratic unity, and with that gone, any chance of - local surcess. ;" ' ' It. ought f 6 be sufficient for every free silver man, ; that , what he demands regarding the free coinage of silver at 16 to 1, is being carried carried oat in moBtof the counties by resolutions. - If thu measure is an assured suc cess, and not even 'the most ultra gold man in this State denies it, why Ihen is it necessary to keep nagging the single standard men? Will not then votes be necessary next November, as well as their moral and financial support from the day ot nominating a State ticket to the closing of the polls on elec tion day? From now nntil the State Conven tion, an extreme conservatism should prevail among Democrats. Thoughtful attention and con sideration should govern the party's movements, deliberations and speech. Unity is necessary, if the party is to win, and how senseless then it is to jeopardise party success in Novem ber, by constant agitation on an issue which is now practically set tled within the party. The Democratic party of North Carolina is in ' no position to take any chances. It needs every vote it can secure, and the Populist, who finds in Democracy what he wants free silver and a good local govern ment, and the Gold Standard Demo crat who gracefully snbmiti to , majority rale, should both receive v cordial and impartial roception by the Democratic free silver party of the State. The Democrat of North Carolina want to carry the State next Novem ber, bat they cannot do so without giving due attention and courtesy to its tingle standard voter and its . Populist friend. i Bicycles and Temperance. It is stated upon good authority that bicycling has decreased the con sumption of intoxicating liquors, and has resulted m a corresponding ly! larger consnmation : of "soft ilrinks." The most ardent advocate of this would hardly have ventured to ascribe to it such a reformity in fluence. It is useless to inquire as to the why and wherefore of the chancre: the fact is said to stand forth beyond the possibility of denial. When once this becomes fully un derstood bv the W. C. T. U. and other organizations there will be new boom for the "bike," and the prohibitionists will put a bicycle plank into their next national platform. One cause, perhaps, for this de crease in the consumption of intoxi cants on the part of the devotees ot the wheol is that the vigrous anu plentiful exercise in the open air in which they indulge lessens the crav ing lor stimulants, wnicn is saiu to be begotten by the atmosphoro of This applies, ol t B" EST with a big B. The South African mining "ring" has made a laBt dasparate effort to excito public sympathy for its evanescent oauso by spreading the report that Mr. Chamberlain had a c.rd "up his sleevo" to tako the odd trick in his game with President Eruger, and that the surprise would bo sprung at the trial of Dr Jameson, when it would be shown that tho real purpose of the raid was to get possession of papers at Pretoria which would have disclosed the fact that the Transvaal Govern ment was involved in an intrigue with Germany. That such an ab surd rumor should havo obtained even momentary credence shows the dense ignorance which prevails m Enghnd concerning South African alTairs. The Boers do not desire any foreign protectorate, and President Kruger has doubtless given voice to the general sentiment of the Dutch Africanders in his declaration that the suzerainty of anv European Power should be presentod to them as a choice of evils they would pre. fer that ol the liritish peoplo, whom they know, and with whose methods of government they are familiar, The cheers ol the Uutlandors lor Oom Paul" upon hearing the news of the release of all except tho four principals in the Johannesburg con spiracy muBt have very seriously dis- concerteu tne itnouesians. unions and Boers in South Africa would probably find a way of adjusting their differences if left to them selvos. MacFarlan Moore, havo announced with an unusual dogree of confidence that the present incandescent elec- trio light must give away soon to the "light of the future," or vacuum tnbo lightning. Each has made experiments which seem to show that the cost ol lighting can be greatly reduced, and each is now working to make bis invention com mercially practicable. Mr, Moore and Mr. Tesla appear to .be follow ing the same general line; . Air. Edison coats his bulb with a nuores cent substance. Tho purpose of all three is to produce a "cold light,, or one which does not waste energy in heat. Mr. Moore has given public demonstration of his ability to light a public ball, and the indi cations are that a fair degree of economy was attained for a first exneriment.
