It was delayed by a pretty bad washoot along the line about two and a half miles below Jackson ville.. Pursuant to the call published in the Journal yesterday morning a large number of the. young society people, who are members of the Pcmbrooke Social Club, met at the home of Miss Lizzie 'Hancock last evening. After the regular. busi ness of the Club was transacted the members engaged in mental danc ing , this dolightful and entertain ing amusement being indulged in until the hostess invited the whole party to partake of refreshments, This is the second time that the mental dance has been interestingly played in New Berne and the game has proven to be one of the best yet introduced hero. .. ! : aalpplaa; Bests. Bell came up to have some repairs done on the machinery of Ills' boat. Capt. H. H. Dowdy informs ns that the elegant and spacious side wheel steamer for the Bay river route has been launched from the ways at Baltimore thoroughly re painted and fitted np, and that it will be brought on and at once put in service. By all meaus the route should include Hyde Co. PERSONAL. Mr. Henry D. Harper, of Kinston is visiting in the city. Dr. Chas. Dully returned last night by the A. & N. 0. K. E. - Mr. C. E. Nelson returned from Morehead City yesterday morn ing. c Mr. J. H. Hunter, of Havelock, spent Friday in the city on busi ness. Miss Jennie Baxter who has been visiting in Norfolk, roturned home yesterday. - Mr. C. Felix Harvey, of Kinston, was on the train last night going to Morehead City. Mri S. S. Mr. Guy Webb, of Kinston, who has been spending several days with Mr. Fred Whitty, returned home yesterday morning. Mr. Wyatt Ward, who has been with J. A. Paris, & Co , sev .ral months has accepted a position as traveling salesman with a Wilming ton mercantile honse. Miss Mamie and Jamie Tolson, who have been spending awhile at Newport returned home yesterday morning. Miss Mann, of Newport, came back with Miss Tolson to pay her a visit. Mr. Jos. E. Robinson. Editor of the Goldsboro Argus, which paper has done so much for the advance ment of Goldsboro and Wayne County, passed through the city yes terday morning en route from More- bead to his home. M. C. President Green called Conference to order and delegates were enrolled. There was a fair attendance, though a few charges were not represented. About forty delegates came down yesterday, and fabonf sixty delegates are attending the Conference. , , j, ' Mrs. Dr. Stainey extended a very pleasant and impressive welcome to the Conference, to which Mies Lilian Fowler,' of Now Berne, responded. Ormond, of the Golds boro circuit, led in'' 'a- discussion on tho "Responsibility of the Teacher.'' He impressed tho importance of Tact ' knowledge of the Lessons Taught and Consecration to the Cause. V : V: "Preparation of the Teacher" was ably discussed by J. Q. Jackson of Kinston. He made a very profound impression, and we hope all the teachers who heard him will carry back to their work an earnest, last ing impression of the importance of of thorough' preparation, .... by the teacher. Bro. Guthrie, of Kinston, ad dressed the Conference on the sub ject of "Preaching to Children." Mia. A. R. Miller, Miss Stella', Wallace and Rev. G. T. Simmons were appointed a committee to ex amine the S. S. reports of tho Dis trict and uncertain what school was entitled to tho Banner for At tendance. . . Rev. J. M. Rhodos, Presidont of Littleton Female College, preached at night from John 15 "As the Father hath loved me so have I Ipved you. Continue ye in my love." It was a discourse full of earnest thought and impressed the resistloBS power of Love. SECOND DAY'S SESSION. Conierence resumed its work at 9 a. m.j being proceeded by a half hour prayer meeting'. ... Dr. Swindell read a paper from G. L. Hardison on "The way to secure attendance on the Sunday schoolr" Rev. H. Cole led in a dis cussion on " "Organizing Mission Sunday schools." Bro. Guthrie and others spoke on the Bame subject. At the close of this discussion tho choir led in that appropriate song "Open the Door for the Children" which was rendered with fine effect and as the song closed Bro. Bum pass of Beaufort was called upon to lead prayer for the conversion of the children of our land. " The committee appoiuted yester day to condense the reports of the Sunday schools and decide who should have the banner, reported 3734 scholars in the district. 11751.- 50 raised in the schools. New Berne reports largest attendance and ban ner was awarded to Centenary, but did not have the largest average at tendance, so by a motion of Confer ence the Banner stays in the hands of the officers of the Sunday school Conference till another annual meet ing. The Conference being unable to decide from the irregular reports what school did have the largest average attendance. Officers were elected for the next year as follows: President C. S. Wallace, of More- head City, Vice President J. W. Bryan, of Goldsboro, Secretary G. S. Pritchard.
