N. Wallace, the young man who was drowned off the steamer Neuss last week was fonnd floating near Brant Island light-house, last Sunday morning. Keeper Hinnant, of the light-house, secured the body and a few hours later hailed the schooner Two Friends, which was passing, and pnt the remains aboard the boat to send them to this city. .', The schooner arrived here yesterday morning, - In the absence of Coroner Street, Dr. Duguid, Superintendent of Health, immediately held an in quest. From the testimony given it was learned that the deceased was last teen alive aboard the steamer Nense. He was rushing aronnd the saloon with a broom in bis hand and only had on one shoe. . Passengers in the saloon reported to one of the officers of ; the boat, that a craiy looking man was running about the cabins. The officer went at onoe to see about the man, but arrived only in time to see him standing on the outside of the rail, "In an. instant he had leaped into the water. The officer jumped to the rail and looked down into the water. By the lights on the lower deck he saw the up turned, haggard face of the. drown ing man, and the glassy eyes of the maniac. With a smothered cry the man sank, ' The officer says ho wijT never forget the face.V.V .1 . . . The coroner's jury decided that the body was that of W. N. Wallace, who jumped overboard - while in sane. V T ' "T viJ '--"i ; J ;' Mr." I. T. Wallace, brother of the drowned man." is in the city and having claimed the body put it in the hands of Undertaker Simpson, ' The deceased was the son of Bev. L T. Wallace, and leaves a wife, sisters, brothers and a widowed mother. The body will be taken to Richmond for interment. A. Jamb Tomato. Mr. Freeman S. He said yester day that some people said that noth ing could be raised over the river around Eruul post office, but to prove these people ignorant or wil ful prevaricators Mr. Ernul present ed, the Journal with an enormous tomato which' was raised on: his place, and weighed one and three quarter pounds. Mary's- The Catalogue of St. Mary's School, Baleigh, N. 0., for 1896-97 has been received. It presents, as formerly, a nice appearance. This old and excellent institution for the education of girls was founded in 1842. The Bev. Bennett Smedes, A. M., who is now Principal of the school, has won for St. Mary's an enviable reputation. -The certificate of the Principal will be accepted for any pupils desiring to enter the Freshman-class of Vassar College. The Advent Term of the fifty fifth school year will begin Septem ber 24, 1896. . Married.
